The National Convention • 1792-1795 • France proclaimed a republic on Sept. 21, 1792 • Abolished monarchy • Based on ideas of Equality, Liberty, Fraternity
New factions • The Mountain • Radical Republicans, urban class • Leaders were Danton and Robespierre • Girondins • More moderate than the Moutain and predominantly rural
Sans-Culottes • Predominantly from the working class, extremely radical • Were separate from the National Convention and had economic agenda • Their violence and influence kept the revolution moving forward • Responsible for storming the Bastille, marching on Versailles, driving King from Tuleries, and September Massacres
Louis XVI • Convicted of treason and executed on January 1793 • If royalist ever returned to power, those who overthrew Louis would lose their lives
Ousted • May 1793 • The Mountain supported by the Sans-Culottes ousted the Girondins • Girondins fled Paris and worked against the Revolution
Committee of Public Safety • 1793-1794 • Became emergency gov’t to deal with internal and external challenges • Led by Maximillien Robespierre • Collaborated with Sans-Culottes
Law of Maximum • Planned economy to respond to food shortages and related economic problems • Enabled France to urge total war against enemies • Gov’t kept goods at certain prices • Price of bread fixed to help poor • Rationing of goods • Arms and munitions produced
Military Victory • Reorganized French army by focusing on war being national mission • By July 1794, Austrian Netherlands and the Rhineland were once again controlled by France • First Coalition was falling apart • Nationalism became a strong force uniting French • Even after victories the Reign of Terror extended
