Periodic Trends IPS: Standard 1, Day 7
CPK: Check Prior Knowledge 1.Distinguish between atomic # and mass #. 2. How many protons are in the Ba atom? 3. What is the amu for the Ne atom 4. Give 2 examples of physical change AND 2 examples of chemical change 5. All matter contains ____ & ____ 6. _______ is a state of matter that has no set volume or shape because its particles are random
Three Parts to the Periodic Table • Metals: Alkali, Alkaline, Transition • Shinny, malleable, conduct heat & electricity • Semimetals: act like both metal & non metal • Nonmetals: opposite of metal. Not shinny, not malleable, don’t conduct
Trends of the periodic table • Periodic law: elements are placed in order of increasing atomic number • Electronegativity: the ability of an element to attract an electron. Increase from left to right and bottom to top • Ionization E: the amount of energy it requires to attract an electron. Increase from left to right and bottom to top • Both of these trends are in the same direction
CST Release Questions Why is cobalt (Co) placed before nickel (Ni) on the periodic table of the elements even though it has a higher average atomic mass than nickel? A Nickel has one more proton. • B Cobalt was discovered first. • C Nickel has fewer electrons. • D Cobalt has a lower density
CST Release Questions Which of the following elements is classified as a metal? A bromine B helium C sulfur D lithium
CST Release Question Which of the following atoms has the largest atomic radius? • A barium (Ba) • B chlorine (Cl) • C iodine (I) • D magnesium (Mg)
Place the following in order of increasing electronegativity I do We Do We Do You Do Ex: Ca, K, Mg K Ca Mg Ex: Ga, Si, Ge GaGe Si Ex: I, Te, At At Te I Ex: Fe, Ru, Tc TcRu Fe
Draw the arrows of ionization & electronegativityin the appropriate direction on the periodic table
CFU: White Board • Give an example of a metal, nonmetal, & semimetal • Place the following elements in order of increasing electronegativity? Ionization? • N, S, & O • Sr, Cs, Ba
Atomic Radius • Atomic radius: This trend shows the relative size across the periodic table. As you move left to right and bottom to top the radius decrease
Place the following in order of increasing atomic radius I do We Do We Do You Do Ex: Ca, K, Mg Mg Ca K Ex: Ga, Si, Ge Si GeGa Ex: I, Te, At I Te At Ex: Fe, Ru, Tc Fe RuTc
Ionic radius • When an atom loses electrons it gets smaller • When an atom gains electrons it gets larger
Electronegativity/ionization increase Atomic Radius decrease Smallest atomic radius highest electronegativity Atomic Radius decrease Electronegativity/ionization increase Largest atomic radius Lowest electronegativity
