  2. Understand the problem • Read the problem carefully a few times. • Make sure you know exactly what you are trying to find. • List the given facts. • Organize the information. • If possible make a sketch or the problem.

  3. Create a plan • Translating into a mathematical expression. • Creating a chart . • Drawing a diagram. • Doing a simplified version of the problem.

  4. Carry out the plan • Be careful, write clearly. • Be ready to come up with a new plan if the first attempt does not work, or you get stuck.

  5. Check answer • Make sure “your” answer is actually answers the question. • Make sure you answer is reasonable.

  6. State the answer clearly. • State your answer clearly! • Your instructor (ME!) should be able to easily find the answer.

  7. Buying stuff • Mary can purchase two seaters on eBay for $19.99 and $16.99. There would be no sales tax on the eBay purchase, but shipping costs would total $6.95. At a local clothing store, the total cost for the same two sweaters would be $42.00 plus 8.25% sales tax. • Which option is cheaper? • How much can Mary save?

  8. Computers • In November 2004, the fastest Intel processor, the Pentium 4, could perform about 3.8 billion operations per second (3.8 gigahertz or 3.8GHz). How many operations could it perform in 0.4 seconds? • (the number of operations needed to crack RSA key is a 20 digit long number)

  9. Insurance! Tad’s medical insurance policy is similar to that of many workers. His policy requires that he pay the first $100 of medical expenses each calendar year (deductible). After the deductible is paid, he pays 20% of the medical expenses up to 600 dollars each year. After that the insurance company pays 100%. Tad just broke his toe and received a bill of $575. • How much does Tad owe? • How much will the insurance company cover?
