What is the Catharsis hypothesis? • Popular around the 1930s and 1940s; it was believed that the media was responsible for all societies problems. • Promotes the idea that media sex and violence has positive effects by allowing people to live out their antisocial desires in a mediated fantasy world. • For example: Some people are affected by the different news medias, as it makes them live their life in complete fear. Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing • When researching how Cartharsis works, it was found that the role of language, gender differences and even demographic age effects the emotional height of an extremely stressful individual. • More research reveals that some subjects begin to suffer mental health problems including a massive increase in anxiety attacks.
