Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation • Multiply the coefficient numbers together. • Then add the exponents to get the power of 10.
Example 1 • Given: (3.1 X 105)(2 X 109) • Multiply coefficients: 3.1 X 2 = 6.2 • Add Exponents: 105X 109=105+9=1014 • Answer: 6.2 X 1014
Example 2 • Given:Find the product of 30000 and 5000 using scientific notation • Convert both numbers: 3.0 X 104 and 5.0 X 103 • Multiply the coefficients: 3 X 5 = 15 • Add exponents: 104+3 • Answer: 15 X 107 • Final Answer: 1.5 X 108

Dividing Numbers in Scientific Notation • Divide the coefficients. • Then subtract the exponents to get the power of 10.
Example 1 • Given:8 X 104 / 2 X 102 • Divide coefficients: 8/2=4 • Subtract exponents: 104-2 = 102 • Answer: 4 X 102
Example 2 • Given:9 X 102 / 3 X 10-5 • Divide coefficients: 9/3= 3 • Subtract exponents: 10(2)-(-5)=107 • Answer: 3 X 107
