Varying Levels of State (and Local) Public Health Participation in Regional Level Efforts • Leading State Efforts with AHRQ Funding-- Utah and Rhode Island • Leading the way with partners, connecting PHIN and EHRs – Minnesota, Wisconsin • At the table in development -- Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Colorado • Supplementing clinics to add public health components to EHRs - New Hampshire

  4. Public Health Contributions • Public Health has epidemiologists who are trained to deal with data • So what if you have the information if you can’t integrate it and mine it to create better public health outcomes (drug therapy, drug interventions, etc.)

  5. Need for Better Linkages with the Clinical Sector • Need to give better information back more quickly - To clinicians and other partners who can affect outcomes - To individuals • Adding Value instead of mandatory reporting • ASTHO Public Health Informatics Committee Priority

  6. Need to Build This Together – Regionally and Nationally

  7. Other State Issues • Data “haves” vs have nots-- covering only some with EHRs and PHRs • Don’t ask me to cut my newborn screening funding to do EHRs • Staffing is a major issue • Need to build the infrastructure

Marty Laventure’s Opportunities for Action • Increase your personal knowledge of HIT & support Informatics training for staff and others • Identify and participate in LHII/RHIO in your state and community • Monitor / apply funding opportunities • Increase collaborative efforts to using information systems • Conduct readiness assessment for HIT • Participate in community/regional collaboration • Increase health informatics knowledge & education • Educate your elected representativeson your needs on this issues

  9. Culture Change Needed • Just as important as these technical developments will be implementing detailed change management strategies among the network of users and policy makers in the general public
