Atmosphere • The air that surrounds the earth. • Extends about 1,000 miles above the earth’s surface.
Hydrosphere • Made up of the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. • Consists of 70 per cent of the earth’s surface.
Lithosphere • Also known as the Earth’s crust. • Makes up 30 per cent of the Earth’s surface.
Biosphere • The part of the earth where life is found.
Inside the Earth • Inner Core • Outer Core • Mantle • Crust
Inner Core • Lies 4,000 miles below the surface of the earth. • Believed to be solid. • Consists of Iron and Nickel
Outer Core • Begins about 1,800 miles below the surface of the earth. • Made up of melted Iron and Nickel.
Mantle • Thick layer of dense, hot rock. • The rock consists of silicon, oxygen, aluminum, iron, and magnesium.
Crust • Thin layer, extending perhaps 3 to 30 miles below the surface. • Consists of huge plate like sections of rock that float on a partially melted layer in the upper mantle. • Includes the continents and ocean basins.
