  1. Johnson’s Presidency • Johnson was elected in a landslide in ’64. • He inherited Vietnam from Kennedy. • Asked for and got the Gulf of Tonkin Res. • His agenda was called the Great Society.

  2. The Big Four • These are the legislative achievements of Johnson’s. • Aid to education – straight to students • Medicare and Medicaid – entitlements • Immigration – eased quotas – family • Voting Rights Act – death to Jim Crow

  3. Racial Tensions Explode • Dr. King had competition as the civil rights activists now had a choice. • They could choose between using civil disobedience or violence. • Many chose violence as “black power” became a symbol for equality. • The Nation of Islam was a catalyst.

  4. Black Power • Malcolm X – Little, was the big voice. • Advocated violence as a means to change. • Incited riots in inner cities. • Killed in ’65 before able to atone.

  5. Death of a King • As the Civil Rights Movement became more violent, strong leaders were needed. • MLK was gunned down in ’68 in Memphis. • More riots occurred in cities all across the country. • A strong, activist voice for peace and equality was silenced.

  6. Vietnam Escalates • Although Johnson inherited Vietnam, he enlarged our involvement. • Tet Offensive in ’68 rocked America as our troop numbers grew. • Peace didn’t seem like an option – only win or lose. • Anti-war sentiment was at an all-time high.

  7. Johnson to Nixon • Johnson announced he would not seek another term. • Bobby Kennedy was the front runner for the Democrats – anti-war candidate. • He was assassinated after winning the California primary. • Nixon defeated Humphrey in election of ‘68

  8. Counter-Culture • Nixon inherited Vietnam, a wounded nation, racial crisis, and hippies. • Much of the counter-culture centered on • Anti-War • Anti-authority • Drug culture • Free love
