  1. Bell Ringer # 1 -Fold a sheet of paper in half (hamburger) then in half again (hotdog). -Label the four sections that are created: Monomials, Binomials, Trinomials, Polynomials

  2. Chapter 8.1 Notes Adding and Subtracting Polynomials

  3. Objectives • SWBAT write polynomials in standard form. • SWBAT add and subtract polynomials. • Students will construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

  4. Polynomials in Standard Form • The degree of a monomial is the sum of the exponents of all of its variables. • The degree of a polynomial is the greatest degree of any term in the polynomial.

  5. Example 1:Identify Polynomials

  6. Guided Practice #1

  7. Example 2: Standard Form of a Polynomial • The standard form of a polynomial has the terms in order from greatest to least degree. In this form, the coefficients of the first term is called the leading coefficient. • Write each polynomial in standard form. Identify the leading coefficient. a) 3x2 + 4x5 – 7x b) 5y – 9 – 2y4 – 6y3

  8. Guided Practice #2 • 8 – 2x2 + 4x4 – 3x • y + 5y3 – 2y2 – 7y6 + 10

  9. Bell Ringer #2 • Pg. 468 (1-9 odds)

  10. Example 3: Adding Polynomials • Find each sum: • (2x2 + 5x – 7) + (3 – 4x2 + 6x) • (3y + y3 – 5) + (4y2 – 4y + 2y3 + 8)

  11. Guided Practice #3 • (5x2 - 3x + 4) + (6x – 3x2 – 3) • (y4 -3y + 7) + (2y3 + 2y – 2y4 -11)

  12. Example 4: Subtracting Polynomials • Find each difference: • (3 – 2x + 2x2) – (4x – 5 + 3x2) • (7p + 4p3 – 8) – (3p2 + 2 – 9p)

  13. Guided Practice #4 • (4x3 – 3x2 + 6x – 4) – (-2x3 + x2 -2) • (8y -10 + 5y2) – (7 – y3 + 12y)

  14. Example 4: Real World • P = 7m + 137 C = 4m + 78 • Write an equation for the total monthly sales T of phones and cameras. • Predict the number of phones and cameras sold in 10 months. • Guided Practice #5:

  15. Exit Slip • 3 Things you Learned • 2 Things you Understand • 1 Thing that still Confuses you. Homework: Chapter 8.1 Skills Practice in WB EXTRA PRACTICE!! Pg. 468-469 (21-43 odds)
