WHAT!?!?!? Yes I know I have picked a star trek film, but this film to be quite honest stands out from the films I have seen. That’s my opinion anyway.
Casting in the clip Kirk ………………..Chris Pine Spock………………………….Zachery Quinto “Harrison”………………………….. Benedict Cumberbatch
Film Synopsis At the beginning, there is an attack on a star fleet archive in London carried out by ex star fleet officer “John Harrison”. And another attack on star fleet officers meeting not long afterwards. In the officer attack, kirk friend Captain Pike is killed and John Harrison flees to Kronos (Klingon home planet and enemies of humanity). Kirk pursue Harrison to Kronos with the mission given by admiral Marcus to use newly built torpedoes on Harrison and kill him. Kirk decides to land on kronos without using the missiles and is attacked by Klingons. However Harrison saves them and kills the Klingons. After the fire fight, Harrison asks Kirk how many torpedoes there are after he was threatened with a message previously about the torpedoes being fired on him. He is answered back with 72. Harrison then surrenders and is now a prisoner of Kirk, but through his captivity, Harrison tells Kirk to open up a torpedo and see what is inside and that there is also something hidden near earth that is the reason for him doing what he has done. Kirk then orders two people to open up the torpedo then finding a human man inside in cryostasis who happens to be 300 years old……..
Before You continue…………… • Please watch the clip before you proceed
First things First • This scene is, in my opinion what turns the movie inside out. It turns good people into bad people and has the main villain’s actions completely justified and asks the viewer an important question, being “is there anything you would not do for your family”. Now Yes, he may well be lying throughout the whole clip but as the film goes on, it turns out he isn’t.
The Dialogue…. • The dialogue is what really sells it for me. Not only does it create a brilliant plot twist, but it makes a villain who throughout history has been seen to be the biggest and most evil villain in the original star trek films, seem to have a conscious and a heart with him as he is fighting for other people.
The Music This is another strong point in the clip. At the beginning there was no music, but ere music comes in when Harrison announces his name to be Khan as if it is a big thing within the film.
Camera Work There is one piece of camera work that I find interesting and adds to the emotion of the scene. There is a camera shot that implements the rule of thirds, having Kirk khan and Spock in the shot. The first and second shots are done in a long shot camera angle having khan being the smallest third showing Kirk and Spock to be more superior, but up to the final moments of the clip, there is a close up shot of khan, still implementing the rule of thirds but this time having him as the primary topic as he is this part he is having a sympathetically appealing moment and having his actions justified.
