Theme Antonia, Rebecca And Freya
Naivety Billy trusted the landlady without weighing up the possible things that could be dangerous about the situation he was in. He put his trust in her. “ she seemed terribly nice” - she may have seemed nice on the outside but Billy did not realise her inner side was much different.. “she gave him a warm welcome and smile” – This seemed to convince billy that the landlady was a genuine kind and pleasant person. “ we have it all to ourselves” – Billy didn’t think there was anything wrong with an old lady who was a stranger to him sat alone in a B&B with an 18 year old boy. Where in this situation most people would find this strange.
Deception The landlady is tricking Billy into a ‘cosy nights stay at the B&B’ ,when before Billy even arrives she has all her actions planned. “ Caught and held in the most peculiar manner by the small notice was there BED AND BREAKFAST,BED AND BREAKFAST,BED AND BREAKFAST,BED AND BREAKFAST.” – This is the beginning of the trick the landlady plays on Billy. It is not a bed and breakfast and Billy doesn’t realise that once he goes in he will never come out. “ No my dear,” she said. “only you.”
Appearances verusus reality “ No my dear,” she said. “only you.” - At the very end of the Short story the reality is beginning to show and Billy starts to Question the rule. The house seems like a nice cosy set up with the dog by the fire place and guests upstairs and the parrot in the cage. When really the reality is the animals are dead and stuffed as are the other guests up stairs, Billy slowly realises what's actually happening and begins to discover the trick the landlady was playing and oversees her false personality.
