Smoking Bands • Why are there smoking bands in public places?
Public Smoking Bands • Adopted statewide in 2006 • Protects non – smokers from secondhand smoke • Impacts workplace and public places • Must remove ashtrays • Placement of non – smoking signs • If caught • Heavy fines • Can close down workplace and business
What is….. • Secondhand smoke • Two types – 69 chemicals that are known to cause cancer! • Sidestream smoke • Smoke from the lit end of the tobacco product • Smaller particles • More carcinogens than mainstream smoke • Mainstream smoke • Smoke that is exhaled by the smoker • Larger particles (filter/lungs) and less carcinogens

Finger Nail Polish • Activity • Groups of 5 • Organize desks
Journal Entry • Get out your journal or a piece of paper • Task • To write/list as many situations you can that peer influence would be strong for you to use tobacco products. • Think about times or imagine situations that could lead to you being pressured by your peers to use tobacco products
Addiction • Is tobacco addictive? Why? • Nicotine • Nicotine stimulates the release of dopamine • This causes a good feeling • Withdraw from nicotine • Shortly after you use a tobacco product nicotine leaves the body • Your brain becomes dependent upon nicotine to release dopamine • This causes a chemical addiction in the brain to nicotine
Experimentation • Tobacco products • Is it dangerous to experiment with tobacco products? • Why is it dangerous? • Nicotine is highly addictive • Immediately develop cravings • Asthma • Should we experiment with tobacco products? • NO!
T – Chart • In groups of two create a T – Chart – List multiple • How your peers can/do positively influence the use of tobacco products • How your peers can/do negatively influence the use of tobacco products

Role Play • PP: Hey man, wanna cigarette? • R: NO! • Say no firmly • PP: C’mon man, don’t be a baby. Take it! • R: Have you seen Mrs. Godzik’s shoes today? They are really cool! • Avoiding by changing the subject • PP: Everyone is doing it. It gives you energy and makes you lose weight! Just take one! • R: No, I have asthma and if I tried smoking a cigarette it could kill me! • Giving an excuse • PP: Oh…. We don’t want that to happen. It’s cool!
Verbal Communication • Assertiveness is key • Attack the problem not the person • Stand up for beliefs without hurting others • Ways to say “NO” • Say no firmly • Repeat the word “NO” over and over • Give an excuse • Example: I tried drinking once and I got extremely sick and puked when I got home. My parents realized I had been drinking and I was grounded for a week.
Verbal Communication Cont. • Ways to say “NO” • Give a reason • Example: Alcoholism runs in my family and I do not want to become an alcoholic. • Avoid or leave the situation • Change the subject • Suggest an alternative activity • Ignore the problem or act dumb • Example: When we have a quiz and you come to class and say “Duh, I do not know what you are talking about”
Verbal Communication Cont. • Ways to say “NO” • Find friends who feel the same way you do • Strength in numbers • Reverse the pressure • Focus on your friendship • Ask “why are you pressuring me” “ why are your on my case so much today” • Delay your decision • Shift the focus on something else or avoid answering • Tell your friends “I have made my decision”
Non – Verbal Communication • Assertiveness is key • Posture • Stand up straight and proud • Do not slouch • Eye – contact • When using your refusal skill, look directly in their eye • Do not look down or show weakness • Confident, but not aggressive voice • Enough to be heard
Role Play • Groups of 3 – Pass out partial skit • Task – To fill in the blank sections on the role play and perform. • Three roles; resister, person pressuring, and a judge. • Resister: The one using ways to say “No” and demonstrating non – verbal's. • Person pressuring: the individual who is pressuring the resister to smoke the cigarette. • Judge: The third individual who is watching and providing feedback. • Everyone will play all three roles. (Rotate)

Use Your Skills • In groups of three you will: • Demonstrate tobacco peer pressure • Two members will be pressuring while one will be resisting • Each member will play both roles • Role 1: Each person pressuring will badger and harass the individual being pressured about smoking a cigarette. YOUR JOB is to convince him/her to smoke the cigarette. • Role 2: The resisters job is to use a minimum of three ways to say “No” and show the appropriate non – verbal's when doing so.
