Objective • SWBAT find solutions of equations in two variables
Section 8.2 “Linear Equations in Two Variables” An example of an equation in two variables is 2x – y = 5. The solution of an equation in two variables, x and y, is an ordered pair(x, y) that produces a true statement when substituted into the equation.
Solving Linear Equations • To find a SOLUTION, substitute the ordered pair into the equation and see if it produces a true statement. 2x – y = 5 Tell whether the ordered pair is a solution to the equation. ordered pair equation substitution check (1, 3) 2x - y = 5 2(1) – 3 = 5 -1 = 5 NO (2,-1) 2x - y = 5 2(2) – -1 = 5 5 = 5 YES
an equation whose graph is a line Linear Equation- y = 4 – 2x
