2. Dear Samuel: I wanted to write you to tell you about a real-life survivor story hoping that you can use some of this advice you ever find yourself in a crisis. In 2003 a young adventurer named Aron Ralston decided to go hiking in Little John National Park, but he didn’t tell anyone where he was going. This was a near-fatal error. Ralston got wedged between a canyon wall and a boulder that crushed his arm. Ralston spent six days standing in a narrow canyon with a few ounces of water, two burritos, and only one arm. The other arm was slowly, painfully dying beneath the boulder. On the sixth day he did what he had to do to survive: he took off down the canyon, but left his arm behind. Severely injured, Ralston hobbled back toward the Jeep he left nearly a week before. Ralston was finally saved by a family of hikers. Not everyone would come out alive from this grueling of an ordeal, but Aron Ralston is a true survivor. There are twelve things that people who survive a crisis situation do, and XX probably did all of them. First, one of the survivor traits in to stay calm. Some people hallucinate or make up a reason to survive. Captain didn’t have to make this up, he had 365 people to survive for. He survived, they would survive. In the end everyone was saved. From captain XX’s experience, I can see how important it is to stay calm and think clearly. I am often someone who panics, or at least needs a situation to calm down before I can deal with it.
