NAJRAN UNIVERSITY College of Applied Medical Sciences General Microbiology Course Lecture No. 12 By Dr. Ahmed MoradAsaad Associate Professor of Microbiology
Sterilization and disinfection • Sterilization: Complete inactivation of all forms of microorganisms • Disinfection: Inactivation of all forms of microorganisms except bacterial spores. • Antiseptic: Compound applied to human tissue to kill or inhibit microorganisms
Disinfectant: Compounds that kill microorganisms but they are harmful to human tissues (inanimate surfaces) • High level disinfectant: Kill bacteria, viruses, mycobacteria and most spores • Low level disinfectant: Kill bacteria and most viruses (not mycobacteria or spores)
Physical means of sterilization • Heat Radiation Filtration • Dry heat Moist heat • - Red heat • -Hot air oven • -Incineration< 100ºC at 100ºC > 100ºC • Pasteurization Boiling Autoclave • Tyndallization
TUTORIALS • Sterilization by radiation • Sterilization by filtration • Disinfectants
Antimicrobial agents • TUTORIALS • Development of resistance (TUTORIAL) • Non-genetic OR genetic drug resistance
