Elements of Expository Writing • Hook: The first sentence in your essay. “Hooks” your reader! • Thesis: A thesis states the central point of the essay. It is often called the controlling idea . It appears as the last sentence in the 1st paragraph. The thesis guides reader , and after they read it they will know exactly what the essay will discuss.
Elements of Expository writing • Introductory Paragraph with Thesis Statement • hooks the reader ‘s interest. • Hook should lead logically to the thesis • Thesis statement appears at the end of the introductory paragraph. • Middle (Supporting) Paragraphs • has its own main point and supporting sentences that support the thesis. • Concluding Paragraph • may draw a conclusion, and restate the thesis statement.
