  2. The taming of the shrew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uE7qjQlfoRs&t=0s&index=2&list=PLa5LEuICdCmkt7pf3bikd8yvDs3g19dUl

  3. 1. You quote Shakespeare and don’t even know it • If you have ever said “It’s Greek to me,” suffered from “green-eyed jealousy,” been “tongue-tied,” “hoodwinked” or “in a pickle,” you are quoting Shakespeare.

  4. Twelfth night https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf67WlthWXk&list=PLa5LEuICdCmkt7pf3bikd8yvDs3g19dUl&index=2

  5. 2. People (not ms. Jones) love him (including scientists) • The planet Uranus has 27 moons, the majority of which are named for Shakespearean characters: Titania, Oberon, Puck (A Midsummer Night’s Dream); Ariel, Miranda, Caliban, Sycorax, Prospero, Setebos, Stephano, Trinculo, Francisco, Ferdinand (The Tempest); Cordelia (King Lear); Ophelia (Hamlet); Bianca (The Taming of the Shrew); Cressida (Troilus and Cressida); Desdemona (Othello); Juliet, Mab (Romeo and Juliet); Portia (The Merchant of Venice); Rosalind (As You Like It); Margaret (Much Ado About Nothing); Perdita (The Winter’s Tale); and Cupid (Timon of Athens). (The two remaining moons, Umbriel and Belinda, are named for characters in Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock.

  7. 3. He’s been a profitable brand for hundreds of years • In 1710, publisher Jacob Tonson started a trend when he adopted Shakespeare’s likeness as his corporate logo, using the Bard’s portrait on his bookshop sign, in advertisements and on the editions of Shakespeare’s works that he published. In the past four centuries, Shakespeare’s strength as a brand has not faltered. In fact, it’s ubiquitous. His likeness and his works have been used to sell soap, chocolate, cigarettes, computers, beer, soda and almost anything else you can think of

  8. hamlet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ujGv5dhGfk&list=PLa5LEuICdCmkt7pf3bikd8yvDs3g19dUl&index=4

  9. 4. His stories and characters are universal • He was masterful at creating characters with qualities that audiences and readers identify with — Hamlet’s anguish, Ophelia’s distress, the enduring love between Romeo and Juliet. And people still use his stories and characters to create today.

  10. othello https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bz1NIOjkJi0&list=PLa5LEuICdCmkt7pf3bikd8yvDs3g19dUl&index=5

  11. Shakespeare wrote about the human condition - he pushed boundaries by writing plays that appealed to everyone, not just the rich. And he even abandoned traditional verse structure at times. When there weren't the words to say what he wished, he created new ones. When he felt a story needed telling, he told it. He unabashedly shared his soul with his audiences and readers - the mark of not only a writer, but an artist.
