What Did Jesus Say About Salvation? "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:32) But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. (Luke 11:28) He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16) And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved. (Matt 10:22) I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. (Luke 13:3) Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." Introduction to Parables (Matthew 13:1-3a) On the same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. And great multitudes were gathered together to Him, so that He got into a boat and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. Then He spoke many things to them in parables, … (Matthew 13:10-17) And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.
Introduction to Parables And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?" He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Introduction to Parables For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'HEARING YOU WILL HEAR AND SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND, AND SEEING YOU WILL SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE;FOR THE HEARTS OF THIS PEOPLE HAVE GROWN DULL.
Introduction to Parables THEIR EARS ARE HARD OF HEARING, AND THEIR EYES THEY HAVE CLOSED, LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, LEST THEY SHOULD UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEARTS AND TURN, SO THAT I SHOULD HEAL THEM.'But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear;for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. (Matthew 13:10-17)
THE DEFINITION OF "PARABLE" A. THE WORD "PARABLE"... 1. Is a transliteration of the Greek "parabole" (para-bow-LAY) 2. Means "to place beside, to cast alongside" 3. As defined by Vine's Expository Dictionary of N.T. Words, it "signifies a placing of one thing beside another with a view to comparison" 4. Wiersbe's description of a parable... a. As "a story that places one thing beside another for the purpose of teaching" b. "It puts the known next to the unknown so that we may learn" 5. A parable can usually be identified by the use of the word "like" - cf. Mt 13:31,33
THE DEFINITION OF "PARABLE" B. AS USED IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, A PARABLE... 1. Is usually a story or narrative drawn from nature or human circumstances 2.From which spiritual lessons can be made by comparison -- A common definition of a parable is "an earthly story with a heavenly meaning"
THE PURPOSE OF THE PARABLES OF JESUS THE PRIMARY PURPOSE WAS TO "CONCEAL"... 1. Jesus began speaking in parables because of the hardness of many people's hearts -cf.Mt13:10-17 2. By resorting to parables, Jesus effectively separated the truth-seekers from the curiosity-seekers! 3. Indeed, Jesus used parables to carry out Divine judgement... - cf. Mt 13:12
THE PURPOSE OF THE PARABLES OF JESUS B. BUT ANOTHER PURPOSE WAS TO "REVEAL"... Even though the primary purpose in telling parables was to conceal the "mysteries of the kingdom of heaven" from the multitude! 2. Therefore, with the help of the Lord's explanation of His parables we can learn more about "the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven" - cf. Mt 13:34-35
Parable Of The Sower Mark 4:3 - 25, Matthew 13:3 - 23, Luke 8:5 - 18 Mark 4:3-25 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow: (4) And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. (5) And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
(6) But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away. (7) And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. (8) And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred. (9) And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
(10) And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. (11) And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: (12) That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
(13) And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables? (14) The sower soweth the word. (15) And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts.
(16) And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; (17) And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended. (18) And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, (19) And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
(20) And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred. (21) And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? (22) For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad.
(23) If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. (24) And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given. (25) For he that hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he hath.
Parable Of Seed Growing In The Ground Mark 4:26 - 29 And He said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."
Parable Of The Tares Matthew 13:24 - 30, 36 -43 Another parable He put forth to them, saying: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field;but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way.But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him,
'Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?'He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants said to him, 'Do you want us then to go and gather them up?'But he said, 'No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them.Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, "First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn." ' "
(Matthew 13:36-43) Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house. And His disciples came to Him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the tares of the field." He answered and said to them: "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels.
Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
Parable Of The Mustard Seed Mark 4:30 - 32, Matthew 13:31 -32 Then He said, "To what shall we liken the kingdom of God? Or with what parable shall we picture it?It is like a mustard seed which, when it is sown on the ground, is smaller than all the seeds on earth;but when it is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all herbs, and shoots out large branches, so that the birds of the air may nest under its shade."(Mark 4:30-32)
Parable Of The Leaven Matthew 13:33 -35 Another parable He spoke to them: "The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till it was all leavened." All these things Jesus spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: "I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS KEPT SECRET FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD." (Matthew 13:33-35)
Parable Of The Hidden Treasure Matthew 13:44 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Parable Of The Pearl Of Great Price Matthew 13:45 - 46 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Parable Of The Net Matthew 13:47 - 50 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was cast into the sea and gathered some of every kind, which, when it was full, they drew to shore; and they sat down and gathered the good into vessels, but threw the bad away.So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
Parable Of The Householder Matthew 13:51 -52 Jesus said to them, "Have you understood all these things?" They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." Then He said to them, "Therefore every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old." When Jesus finished these parables, he departed. Matt. 13:53
What Does The Bible Say About Salvation? He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16) The like figure whereunto evenbaptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: (1 Peter 3:21) Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, (Acts 17:30) "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. (John 5:24) Acts 16:31 31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." (John 8:24) …Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Revelation 2:10) I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. (Luke 13:3) "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 10:32) Rom. 10:14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?... 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:4) For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Romans 10:10) John 15:10If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
