Alphabet Soup Programs • Roosevelt adopted many programs to try to mitigate the effects of the Great Depression • Other programs were developed to bring the country out of the depression and to prevent major depressions in the future • Many of these programs went by acronyms • There were so many different programs and acronyms, some called them “alphabet soup”
CCC- Civilian Conservation Corp • Established in March 1933 • Mainly dealt with maintaining and developing public lands • Many young men were sent to all parts of the United States to work on construction projects • Many parks, roads, and recreational areas were built or expanded by the CCC
PWA- Public Works Administration • Established in June 1933 • Goal was to move the unemployed off relief (unemployment) and back to work • Created jobs by using government money to fund large projects like building dams, airports, hospitals, schools, navy ships, etc. to benefit the public • Much of the work of the PWA is still in use today
FSA- Farm Security Administration • Started as the Resettlement Administration in April 1935, became the FSA (part of the Department of Agriculture in 1937 • Developed to help poor farm families • Many activities including loans to small farmers, job training, and building shelters and camps for migrants moving around the country looking for work or a new start
WPA- Works Progress Administration • Established in May 1935 • Similar to the PWA in trying to use government money to fund jobs to reduce unemployment while creating useful public works • Did smaller building projects at the local level, also supported artists, writers, and other cultural activities • WPA murals can still be found in many U.S. Post Offices today
Assignment • Design a collage of pictures showing the work of different New Deal “Alphabet Soup” programs • You need a minimum of 4 pictures from 4 different programs (you can only use one New Deal prgram from this powerpoint) • Pictures can be drawn or printed • Each picture must be identified on the back- what is the picture about and what “Alphabet Soup” program is being represented
