  2. Daily Schedule • Morning Meeting • Whole Group Reading and Writing • McKenna and Walpole Groups • Read Aloud • Recess/Lunch • Calendar • Content (Science or Social Studies) • Resource • Math • Closing Circle/Dismissal

  3. Grading Policy • 4= Above proficient or working above grade level • 3= Proficient or working at grade level ( This is where most kids will be.) • 2= Below Proficient • 1= Insufficient evidence of proficiency

  4. Grading Policy Continued • 40% will be considered formative assessments- ex. Daily classwork, quizzes, assignments • 60% will be summative assessments- tests, projects, cumulative activities

  5. Literacy • Shared Reading • Whole Group- Using Basal • Comprehension Strategies • Author Study • McKenna and Walpole Reading Groups • Small Groups • Literacy Work Stations

McKenna and Walpole… • Focuses on individualized student needs • Strong phonetic base • Focuses on phonological awareness and decoding skills first • Testing every 4 weeks to determine students’ needs • Regrouping students within the grade level to best meet their needs • Students may travel to another teacher for a round of instruction to best meet their individual needs • Word Study is completed within McKenna groups and in centers. It is based on the skills the students are working on.

  8. …McKenna and Walpole Continued.. • After decoding needs are met, fluency and comprehension is the next area we target for instruction. • Parents can help students decoding and fluency by having their children read their assigned books at least 2 times

  9. Math • Envision (computer centered) • Manipulatives • Whole Group • Small Group • Parent support at home • Addition/Subtraction • Money • Time • Measurement • Word Problems

  10. Social Studies/Science • Taught on a rotating schedule • Hands on activities and experiments • Science series focuses on experiments and hands-on activities; plant unit coming up • Incorporation of writing • Weekly Reader

  11. Field Trips • Fall Field Trip –Sept. 23rd-Johnson’s Farm (not the apple orchard) • Spring Field Trip –TBD- • All parents are invited to attend the field trip. However, we ask that you follow the buses or meet us there. 
