  1. Driver Training and TestingCan we learn from other countries? Trevor Wedge Director International Solutions 4Safer Driving Former DSA Chief Driving Examiner and Director for Safer Driving Former Chairman - CIECA Expert Advisory Group Fellow of AIRSO

  2. Outline • The problem • My background • Improving road safety – a basic model • Road safety goals • Trainer competence • Education and training • The driving test • Licensing • Conclusions

  3. The problem • About 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads and between 20 and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. • Road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among young people, aged between 15 and 29.

  4. A Global Problem Over 90% of the deaths on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, which have only 48% of the world’s registered vehicles.

  5. The potential for progress • Road traffic injuries can be prevented. A number of countries, mainly high-income countries, have made significant progress over the last few decades in reducing their road traffic death rates. But more can be done to reduce these rates further.

  6. Now is the time to act Road traffic injuries are predicted to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030, resulting in 2.4 million deaths a year. This projected ranking would be the result of an increase in road traffic deaths and reductions in deaths due to other health conditions.

  7. International Solutions 4Safer Driving Promotes the development and raising of standards of driver and rider training and testing to reduce casualties on the world’s roads.

  8. What is CIECA? CIECA • International Commission for Driver Testing Authorities • Based in Brussels, Belgium • Formed in 1956 • An international association supporting driver training and testing across the globe • www.cieca.be
