Secondary School • After secondary school young people have more choice about the type of environment they learn, work or live in. • How can we help our young people to manage this time?
Common Themes • Communication • Homework!!
Communication • Try to bear in mind ........ • they will have had a lot of communication demands placed on them during the day
How can we help? • Try not to question as soon as they get in. • Consider alternative ways of communicating about school....
Homework Problems • Rigid thinking – home is home, school is school .... • Not enough/any information in their homework diary • Open ended activity • Project work • Takes them far longer than it should • Do bare minimum and insist they are finished
How can we help? • Homework club if there is one. • Some schools have homework info. on website • Parents who have children in the same classes as yours • If there is support in lessons can homework diary be checked?
Help to structure activity or break it down into smaller sections for project work • Most schools are happy for you to sign the page when a certain amount of time has been spent on subject
And for those who won’t start at all?..... Mum/Dad asks me to do homework I refuse I do my homework We argue – she/he asks me again I am free to ...... I refuse You are in control of/it is your choice what happens now.
