Spain Closes Missions in East Texas • Marques de Rubi – Investigate need for East Texas missions • Concluded Spain didn’t have the power or resources to defend its missions • Suggested that Spain abandon all but San Antonio and Goliad • Settlers in East Texas should move closer to San Antonio • Governor Ripperda closed all missions in East Texas
Nacogdoches Founded • Gil Ybarbo pleaded with governor to allow settlers to move back to East Texas • Allowed them to move close to East Texas- Bucareli • Eventually moved without government permission to Nacogdoches • Spain had little control over what settlers did
Spain helps American Colonists • Spain abandoned funding by the 1790’s for all missions • Spain assisted the Americans in their revolution • Galvez raised armies to help Americans • Kept New Orleans open to shipping • Kept Spanish controlled Louisiana out of British hands
US buys Louisiana • 1803 Louisiana Purchase • America bought it from France-Napoleon Bonaparte • 15 million dollars • US territory stretched from Atlantic to the Rocky mountains • Settlers getting closer to Spanish controlled territories
Disputes over boundaries • Boundary between Louisiana and Texas disputed • Neutral ground- Between Arroyo Hondo and the Sabine river • 1819 Adams Onis Treaty set boundary between US and Texas • Spain gave US Florida • Agreed to Sabine river as eastern boundary • US surrendered all claims to Texas • Neutral territory in US now
Americans Migrate to Texas • Many different people migrated to Texas • Farmers, traders, FILIBUSTERS- adventurers • Philip Nolan- mustanger, suspected spy • 1800 entered Texas to get more horses, surrounded by Spanish and Nolan was killed, his men taken to prison
Section 2Unrest grows in Texas • Best jobs reserved for men sent over as administrators • Increased taxes • Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued a call for freedom • Hidalgo captured and executed
Gutierrez Magee Expedition • Gutierrez de Lara was a supporter of Father Hidalgo • Sent to US to get money and supplies • De Lara invaded Texas to liberate, or free it from Spanish rule • Recruited solders- Magee joined fight • Republican Army of the North • Captured Nacogdoches, Goliad and San Antonio
Disagreements and Defeats • Quarrels over what type of government • Americans favored representative government • Mexicans preferred a government of appointed officials • America wanted Texas a part of the US • Republican army had its first loss • Arredondo crushed the Republican army • Executed soldiers and anyone associated with Lara’s rebellion
Revolutionaries and Pirates • Supporters of the revolution found safe haven in Galveston • Teamed up with pirate Louis Michel Aury who captured Spanish ships • When Aury returned to Galveston another pirate Jean Laffite was controlling it • Laffite had helped the Americans in the War of 1812 • Lafitte captured Spanish ships for gold • Tried to attack American ships.. Navy stopped that.. • Moved on to the Caribbean .. Legend has it he stashed GOLD on an island..
James Long Invades Texas • Believed that the US had a claim to Texas, disagreed with the Adams Onis Treaty • Captured Nacogdoches • Asked Jean Laffite for help, Laffite refused • Recruited more people and invaded Texas • Captured by Spanish and taken to Mexico City and was killed
Spanish Rule Ends in TexasSection 3 • 1821Mexico becomes independent of Spain • Texas only had 3 settlements- San Antonio, Goliad and Nacogdoches
Spanish Neglect • Hard to attract settlers- no gold or riches • Mexico City grew tremendously • Land in other places, other than Texas, was more fertile and cheap and peaceful Native Americans • San Antonio and Goliad were neglected, understaffed and were raided by Indians
Spanish Legacy • Spain populated and mapped region • Texas bears Spanish names • Built first roads • El Camino Real or Old San Antonio Road • Settlers brought horses, cattle and sheep and pigs to Texas • Spanish ranching • Lariats , vaqueros
