  3. MAKING THE DECISION • Is postgraduate study in the USA the right step for my career goals? • Can I afford the expense of the application process and the expense of attending? • Do I have enough time to complete the application process? • Am I ready to commit to the degree course in the USA?

HOW TO CHOOSE • Get a list of the universities which offer your subject. • Talk to your tutors and pinpoint leaders in your field. • Contact universities for information. • When selecting universities, consider: • admissions standards • the cost of attending • financial aid possibilities • the location, climate, degree requirements and duration

  5. WHAT IS IN AN APPLICATION • Application Form • Scores from a standardised test e.g. GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT • Transcript • Recommendations • Statement of Purpose

New GRE Test (October 2006) • 4 Hours long, instead of 2 1/2 hours • Computer adaptive format • The difficulty of each question is determined by whether the previous question was correct. • New formats, with different types of questions • Grading scale will be 110-150 points per section. • The test will only be offered 30 times per annum. • New sample questions available www.ets.org/gre

  8. The New Verbal Reasoning Measure • Analogies and Antonyms eliminated • More critical reading questions • Sentence-equivalence questions • 40 minutes, instead of 30 minutes

  9. Quantitative Reasoning • Not as many questions dealing with geometry • More data interpretation and word problems • There will be an online calculator available • Four functions with square root capabilities • Now 40 minutes, formally 45 minutes.

  10. Analytical Writing • More specific essay questions • Two essays, with 30 minutes to complete each. • Admissions Deans will now have access to read the writing samples.

UNIVERSITY FUNDING FACTS • One third of foreign graduate students in US receive financial assistance from universities attended. • University funding more likely for a PhD than a Master’s degree programme. • University funding least likely for a professional Master’s degree programme. • Deadline for financial assistance occasionally earlier than deadline for application for a place.

HOW TO APPLY • PENULTIMATE YEAR • 18 TO 15 MONTHS IN ADVANCE • Research US graduate courses • Investigate all funding options • Register for standardised tests (paper and pencil) • First funding deadlines arrive • Request application forms, course and financial aid information from universities • FINAL YEAR • 12 TO 11 MONTHS IN ADVANCE • Register for standardised tests (computer-based) • Request recommendations • Acquire official transcripts • Write statement of purpose • 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE • First university deadlines arrive
