A Conclusion should Include: • A restatement of the thesis • A summary of the main evidence • A connection to modern day • An explanation of “So what”
Restate the Thesis • First sentence of the conclusion: • Restate the thesis • NOT in the same exact words
Example: Restate your Thesis • Thesis: : The fastest way to annoy parents is by ignoring them when they talk, asking for money, and not doing chores. • Though there are many ways to annoy parents, ignoring parents when they talk, asking for money, and not doing chores prove to be some of the fastest ways to anger them. • Ignoring parents when they talk, asking for money, and not doing chores quickly annoys parents.
Summarize the Main Evidence • Summarize the main points of the body paragraph (in different words) • Start with the first body paragraph and move chronologically to the second and third • Show how your evidence fits together
Example: Summarize the Evidence • Hawaii is the best place to vacation • ToS: Hawaii’s beautiful beaches make it an excellent vacation spot because they contribute to the relaxing atmosphere. • CS: The sound of waves and soft sands contribute to Hawaii’s relaxing atmosphere. • Summary: • The sounds of the waves paired with Hawaii’s beautiful beaches makes it a relaxing and enjoyable place to visit. OR • Due to the sound of the waves and Hawaii’s soft sands, the beaches make an excellent vacation spot for people looking to relax.
Example 2: Summarize the Evidence • Beowulf is a depiction of an ideal king. • ToS: Beowulf is an ideal king because he takes care of his people. • CS: Beowulf’s sacrifice to win the treasure and give it to his people shows his dedication to being a good and successful king. • Summary: • Beowulf is depicted as a good king because he dies trying to win and distribute treasure to his people to ensure their survival. OR • Beowulf’s action of dying to win treasure to give to his people demonstrates his ability to be a good king because he is putting his followers needs before his own life.
Make a Connection to Modern Day • This is how to answer “so what” and make an issue relevant • Pick something interesting and specific • Ex. 2017 Hurricanes in Puerto Rico vs. dangerous hurricanes in ocean located cities
Example: Connecting to Modern Day • Beowulf’s action of dying to win treasure to give to his people demonstrates his ability to be a good king because he is putting his followers needs before his own life. • Like Beowulf, Sgt. Alvaro Barrientos, a 2017 recipient of the Purple Heart, demonstrated his leadership abilities when he was wounded in Afghanistan protecting his fellow soldiers. • Barrientos, proved he was good at his position because he was willing to sacrifice himself in order to help others. • Both Beowulf and Barrientos display the importance of sacrifice in order to be a good leader. • People can learn from their example of being selfless in order to help others.
In the Conclusion… DO NOT • Start the conclusion paragraph with “In conclusion” or “In closing” • Introduce a new idea, topic, or new piece of evidence • Make sentimental or emotional appeals (This makes me feel) • Include quotations
Example Conclusion • The obvious choices for compassionate characters in the Hunger Games may have been Katniss or Peeta, but the character who personifies compassion best was Prim. Throughout the series, her compassion can be seen when she keeps secrets from her mother for Katniss, when she heals Gale after he gets whipped, and the last act of her life as she rushed to save children in the Capitol. She truly lives Albert Schwritzer’s words, “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.”
