2 Peter 1:3-11 Diligently Building Your Faith
Life and Godliness (3,4) • All Things Pertaining to Life and Godliness • Given to us by his Divine Power • Life- our spiritual life or union with God • Godliness- Living our life through faith. • 2 Tim 3:16,17. All Scripture given by God is profitable.
Life and Godliness (3,4) • Through the knowledge of Him who called us • A knowledge of God and Jesus. • More than intellectual knowledge. • Means full and thorough knowledge or recognition. • We must become fully acquainted with God and Jesus.
Life and Godliness (3,4) • Exceedingly Great and Precious Promises • The gifts God has promised are very great and valuable. • God is the giver of them. • They also enable us to get out of this life alive. • Forgiveness of sins, Holy Spirit, God’s Care and Strength, Eternal life.
Life and Godliness (3,4) • Partakers of the Divine Nature. • We share in things related to God’s divine nature. • We do not partake in God’s deity. • We can take part in his divinity. • Holiness, Love, Righteousness, etc. • We can take part in all of these.
Life and Godliness (3,4) • Escaped the Corruption • Through these precious promises and this divine nature, we can overcome the world. • When we obey the Gospel, we become new. Rom 6:3,4; Eph. 4:22-24
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Giving All Diligence • We must be diligent in our service to God. • Half-hearted service is not pleasing to God Rev 3:15,16; Matt 6:24. • We must have determination if we hope to build our faith!
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Add- From Greek epichoregeo meaning to bring alongside or to join together. • We must add to our faith. • Faith is our foundation. Heb. 11:6; John 6:29 • Without faith anything else is meaningless.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Virtue- Moral Excellence, integrity. The courage to stand up for your convictions. • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego had this courage. • We must have courage to stand for our convictions.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Knowledge-understanding, insight. • A knowledge of God and His Word. • Our faith must be built on our knowledge of God’s Word. • We must be firmly grounded in the truth. • We must continue to add knowledge to virtue.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Self Control- subduing our passions and desires. • W/o self control, we find knowledge without practice. • Every sin is a lack of self control • Self control must be brought alongside our faith.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Patience, we must have patience in our service to God and Jesus. • We must endure whatever hardships come our way. • Patience, while at times difficult, must be added to our faith.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Godliness- Respect or reverence for God and his demands for our lives. • We will strive to pattern our lives after Jesus’ life. • We need to develop godly attributes. • Godliness is needed to build our faith.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Brotherly Kindness- desire to do good to all. • We need to be like the Good Samaritan. • We ought to try to help our others in any way we can. Gal 6:2,10. • Let us diligently add brotherly kindness to our faith.
Diligently Add To Your Faith (5-7) • Add to your faith • Love- Caring enough to sacrifice for what is best. • We must always seek the best for others. • Love shows our devotion to God, Jesus, and our fellowman. • 1st and 2nd Commands Matt 22:37-39 • We must supply love to our faith.
“These Things” (8-11) • Yours and Abound • These things must be a part of out lives. • They must be abundant. • How much physical abundance do we have? • Do we have such spiritual abundance? • With abundance we will not be unfruitful.
“These Things” (8-11) • He who lacks these things • If we lack these qualities, we are shortsighted. • Spiritually near-sighted. • Forgotten that we have been cleansed of our sins. • Let us never forget that Jesus cleansed us from our sins.
“These Things” (8-11) • Make Your Call and Election Sure • We must give diligence or be determined to make our call and election sure. • Do we treat it with due urgency? • 1 Pet 2:9 Are you sure you are of God’s elect? • Are we diligent to make sure?
“These Things” (8-11) • You will never stumble • We will never stumble if we are diligently serving God as we ought to. • We must not let the cares of the world in. • James 2:10 • If we keep our focus on God, we will not stumble.
“These Things” (8-11) • Abundant Entrance Into the Kingdom • We will gain entrance into the Kingdom of Heaven. • We can look forward to our reward. • We can victoriously claim our reward. • 2 Tim 4:6-8
