MDOT Winter Operations Statistics • Average winter expenditure over $50 million • Average salt usage is 650,000 tons • Average sand usage is 150,000 tons • Responsible for 32,561 total lane miles • 7,752 miles are directly maintained by MDOT • 24,809 miles are maintained under contract with local agencies • 66 contract counties, 150 contract cities
Liquids for Winter Maintenance • MDOT garages use 300,000-400,000 gallons of ABP/year • Currently have Boost under contract for $.72-$.90 per gallon • Contract agencies that prewet or anti-ice use many different materials
Winter Maintenance Equipment • MDOT owns 300+ snowplows • Includes single and tandem axels • Use dumps w/slide in hoppers and chassis mount hoppers • Use Y-chutes, side delivery and auger type delivery systems and some zero velocity • Predominately use underbody plows
RWIS • Currently do not have any functioning RWIS in the state • Will be installing up to 20 stations in the next several years in the Upper Peninsula • Other regions won’t be implementing RWIS until 2011.

Roadway Operations Unit • Three person unit in the central maintenance office • Serve as a resource for regions implementing new technology for maintaining roads • Assist in the development of training for MDOT and contract agencies • Initiate and manage maintenance related research

Winter Operations Projects • Winter maintenance performance measure pilot • Monitoring of SafeLane installation
Winter Performance Measure Pilot • Used the I-96 Corridor from Lansing to Brighton • Pilot project looked at three performance measures • Vehicle Speed • Regain Time (From Minnesota) • Friction (From Ohio)
Vehicle Speed • Collect and record vehicle speed data • Compare average speeds before and during storms • Make assumption on road conditions based on vehicle speeds • Once equipment was functioning travel speed showed a lot of potential for measuring performance
Time for roads to return to bare lane condition after a storm stops Operators were asked to record when the storm starts and stops, as well as when the road returned to bare pavement Had trouble getting the forms filled out correctly and completely Regain Time
Friction • Friction values can be correlated to road conditions • Used a Cargill road traction tester on a pickup truck • Equipment worked fine but doesn’t seem feasible for statewide implementation
SafeLane™ Evaluation • SafeLane™ is an epoxy overlay • Developed at MTU and in use in 12 states • Marketed by Cargill as an anti-icing overlay and an impermeable sealer • Aggregate absorbs deicers and releases as road conditions warrant • http://www.cargillsafelane.com/
SafeLane™ Evaluation • Northbound lanes of US-127 over Looking Glass River are coated with SafeLane™ • Southbound lanes are coated with MDOT’s standard epoxy overlay • Evaluated surface conditions of Southbound compared to Northbound

ICE Series Blades • Individual carbide inserts • Inserts are separated by steel for better fracture resistance • L’anse and St. Ignace have both had success w/these

Accuplace • Zero-velocity spreader • Roughly $6,000 each
Wiper Shaker • Vibrating wiper arm • In cab control • Will free snow and ice from wiper blade
Non-Invasive Road Condition Sensor • Measures road temp and road condition using infrared technology • Will display grip index of road surface based on condition and temperature • Currently two operational in the state
Ice and Snow…Take it Slow! • New national winter safety campaign • Created posters for all rest areas and MDOT facilities to display • All press releases this winter contained the slogan
