This is not… • … an explanation of the importance of physics programs or of physics programs at HBCUs. • … a cry that is oblivious to the threats facing any other program at any other institution.
This is … • … an exposition of the threats to physics programs. • … an exposition of strategies to address the threats. • … a call to arms of faculty whose programs may be under threat.
The Situation • Grambling State University. • Sothern University-Baton Rouge. • Prairie View A&M State University. • Texas Southern University. • University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. • Mississippi Valley State University. • Alcorn State University. • Jackson State University.
What Do We Do? • Admit that we have a problem. • Austin, TX meeting in October 2011 following the September 2011 Joint Meeting of NSBP/NSHP. • Called Meeting for October 19, 2013 of the Howard University Graduate Physics Alumni Association.
Agenda • Layout the current state of physics programs at U. S. institutions of higher education. • Give all participants the opportunity to assess the causes of the decline in enrollment in physics programs. • Give all participants the opportunity to present strategies for solving the problem. • Develop an action plan for which we have a reasonable expectation of making a positive difference.
