What is Communicative Language Teaching? A set of principles about the goals of language teaching, how learners learn a language, the kind of classroom activities that best facilitates learning and the roles of teachers and learners in the classroom.
Traditional approach Vs Current Communicative approach • Traditional: • Full Focus on grammatical competence • It was believed that language learning meant building up large repertoire of sentences and grammatical patterns and learning to produce these accurately and quickly in the appropriate situation. • Methodology used here was controlled practice and later on introduce four skill routine- speaking listening, reading and writing
Traditional approach Vs Current Communicative approach Current: • It is believed that learners learn language through communicating in it. • Live communication provide better opportunities to learners than through a grammar based approach.
TRENDS IN CLT • Traditional approach carried out till late 60s • Classic Communicative language teaching dates back to late 90s • Current Communicative language teaching till present
Current Approaches • Current approaches to methodology draw on earlier traditions in communicative language teaching and continue to make reference to some extent to traditional approaches.
The approaches • Seeks to develop students communicative competence • Create need for communication, interaction, and negotiation of meaning through the use of activities such as problem solving, information sharing and role play • Provide opportunities for both inductive and deductive grammars • Use of content that connects to students’ lives and interests • Allows personalization of learning
