Geographical Characteristics & Climate • New England’s colony Rhode Island had rich soil, then the glaciers pushed it away to another colony. • It was too sandy to farm, and in the mild winter it was cold and the ground had a thin layer of ice on it , in the sort summer it was warm and sunny.
Geographical Characteristics & Climate • Rhode Island had dense forests and a very thin rocky layer of soil, and also a humid climate. • The region’s many forests and rugged mountains made it hard to find good farmland. Also, this was a good place to make a living, with it’s rocky coast and many harbors. The thick forests provided wood to builds ships.
Religious Beliefs • The religious beliefs of Rhode Island was to worship freely , and they were mostly Puritans. • Williams kept the government separate from the church. This was an important event in the history of religious freedom in North America.
Religious Beliefs • The Great Awakening was a big part of religion. It occurred in the 1730s, when young, exciting ministers began speaking through the English Colonies. Then the colonists began to make religion a more important part of their lives. • This renewed interest in religion became known as the Great Awakening because people felt as if they were waking up with new faith.
Government • In Rhode Island the government was to self-govern. • Also only male church members could vote or be elected. • The government could not make laws that effected the religion in the colony.
Education • The education in Rhode island was that the kids had to learn to read the Bible. • Some children in families in Rhode Island learned to read, write from their parents, or they went to schools to learn as well. • The boys in the families went to colleges if they had good education or enough money.
Agriculture/Manufacturing • The agriculture was fishing, and whaling, they grew crops such as corn, wheat, also oats, and peas. • The people of Rhode Island made their own shoes and their own clothes. • The Triangular Trade was a big part of manufacturing because New England merchants shipped fish and lumber to Europe, Africa, and the West Indies to trade for goods. They used the sea a lot for the manufacturing.
Settlements/Homes • The home life in Rhode Island is the families were large often with six or seven children. • The families lived in small wooden houses with few rooms or windows, and the homes had just one main room, with a huge fireplace. A cooking fire was kept burning at all times. A table stood in the middle of the room for meal. Also the first few homes only lasted a few years ,then the colonists soon replaced them with larger and stronger structures.
Settlement/ Homes • The home work in RhodeIsland is the home had a workshop, and almost everything needed to be grown or made at home. • Rhode Island actually didn’t have any plantations so the didn’t really have any settlements for their homes.
Town/Cities • The major city inRhode Island is Providence, It is the only major city in Rhode Island in the 1600s.
Other Interesting Facts • The native Americans in New England were friendly and willing to help. • There were many natural recourses in New England. • New England has perfect weather in the winter for sports like skiing. • It is never to hot in New England.
Important People To Know • Some important people to know are Anne Hutchinson she criticized Puritan ministers. She also held meetings in her home were people could talk about their religion. • Also Olaudah Equianowas enslaved as a boy, he survived the Middle Passage. Years later, he discribed the horrors of the Passage in a book. • Metacomet was a leader of the Wampanoag Nation.
