  2. 1926.20 – General Safety & Health Provisions • Accident prevention programs which include frequent and regular inspections of the job sites, materials, and equipment shall be made by a COMPETENT person • Any unsafe equipment, tools, materials, or machinery shall be locked or tagged to make them unusable or completely removed from the jobsite.

  3. 1926.20 con’t • ONLY employees qualified by training or experience shall be allowed to operate equipment or machinery (e.g. forklifts)

  4. 1926.21 – Safety Training and Education • The employer is responsible for implementing safety & health program • The employer shall instruct all employees in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions and relevant regulations • Employees required to use poisons, caustics, or other harmful substances shall be instructed about safe handling and use, as well as personal hygiene and required PPE

  5. 1926.21 con’t • On job sites where plants and animals pose a hazard, employees shall receive instructions related to safety issues • All employees required to enter into confined spaces shall receive appropriate training and PPE (major concern when dealing with welding and cutting)

  6. 1926.22, .23, .24 • Recording & reporting of injuries (.22) • First aid and medical attention (.23) covered in Subpart D • Fire protection and prevention (.24) covered in Subpart F

  7. 1926.25 -- Housekeeping • During construction all debris shall be kept cleared from work areas • Combustible scrap shall be removed regularly • Appropriate containers shall be provided for the collection & separation of construction waste

  8. 1926.26 -- Illumination • All work areas shall contain adequate lighting

  9. 1926.27 -- Sanitation • Covered under Subpart D

  10. 1926.28 – Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • The EMPLOYER is responsible for requiring the wearing of appropriate PPE where deemed necessary

  11. 1926.33 – Access to Employee Exposure & Medical Records • See 1910.1020 • Summary – the employee or designated representative of the employee shall be granted access to the medical records in a timely manner after request is made

  12. 1926.34 – Means of Egress • Exits shall be maintained free of any barriers which might hinder an unobstructed escape from the structure • Exits shall be clearly marked and if not obvious…access to these exits shall also be clear and visible

  13. 1926.35 – Employee Emergency Action Plan • The emergency action plan shall be in writing • They shall contain certain minimum elements [see 1926.35 (b) (1)] & Goetsch page 435 • The employer shall have and train employees on the alarm system used for various emergencies (evacuation, fire, hazardous weather conditions)
