Jazz begins in New Orleans. A New Orleans Jazz Band (from around 1900 – not called ‘jazz’ at the time!). Most musicians were self-taught. Used the instruments of USA Marching Bands. Most originally came from funeral bands of New Orleans. NEW ORLEANS JAZZ / DIXIELAND.

NEW ORLEANS JAZZ / DIXIELAND Developed from (funeral) marching bands in early 1900s Uses trumpets, trombones, clarinets, tuba or double bass, banjo keeping crotchet rhythms and piano (rhythm section) Featured melodic instruments improvising at the same time (POLYPHONIC IMPROVISATION)
Big Band Jazz / Swing Big Bands developed during the 1930s and contain between 12-25 players of trumpets, trombones, saxes and rhythm section The music is not improvised like New Orleans Jazz as there are more players – the parts are “arranged” carefully Space is given in the middle of a piece to a soloist Glenn Miller was a famous Big-Band Leader from the 1940s
BEBOP / MODERN JAZZ In the 1940s, some musicians got tired of the restrictive, “arranged” style of the Swing Big Bands They wanted a style which allowed them to improvise for long periods of time Bebop is very fast, free in structure and can sound ‘jarring’ It is not for dancing to like earlier Big Band music was Miles Davis is a famous trumpeter whose career began in this musically-changing era of Bebop
