  1. SL(C)5 and production news ALICE-LCG TF November 6, 2008

  2. SL(C) 5 • Currently certified at CERN (gcc 4.3) • SLC5 nodes deployed and available • CE and queues for ALICE were set by IT • Since yesterday we are running at CERN on SLC5 • Compatibility mode – gcc 3.4 compiled code • Seems to be working fine • No surprises expected

  3. SL(C) 5 - challenges • Working in compatibility mode is a drawback • The code must be compiled on the ‘lowest common denominator’ system, i.e. SLC4, gcc 3.4 • And work like this until majority of resources are migrated to the new OS • SL(C)3->SL(C)4 migration took about 1.5 years! • Compatibility libraries are always a mess (do we also need gcc 3.4 on SL(C)5!) • Partial code compilation ‘on the fly’ (user analysis) will not work • Lose out on the system improvements, especially advanced compilers options and features

  4. SL(C) 5 – challenges (2) • Application/ALICE Grid software on SL(C)5 • Should not be a problem – all ALICE applications are already ported (semi-privately) to new OS-es • Client Grid software (aliensh) – already there • AliEn – same as above • Services • WN – SL(C)5 version tests next week • VO-box (UI, proxy renewal) • The rest of the services (important for the sites) • The two above are still not discussed (and I am not aware of the plans)

  5. SL(C) 5 – ALICE desiderata • Aggressive updates of all sites to SL(C)5 • As soon as possible and complete migration in few months timeframe • Native SLC5 should be sufficient for us – no compatibility should be required • Complete the SLC5 tests at CERN • Provide standard build system for SLC5 and build all code • Work with sites to complete the updates as we did last year for the SL(C)4 migration • Should be accomplished before restart of LCC otherwise a delay of 1 year

  6. Production news • Two Pb+Pb production approved by the Physics board and being configured to start • 100Kevents each – relatively small scale, but a welcome load • p+p (300Mio events) production still under discussion • User analysis ongoing – the load is increasing steadily • Still not a constant load on the Grid • SEs are holding well and more are added • Disk-based SE at CNAF (StoRm + xrootd) configured
