  1. SPM review COSMO General Meeting, 13September 2012

  2. Recent developments As you already know, the current COSMO year brought significant changes to the work of the consortium: • we have not only new Chairman of the STC, WG5 Coordinator and new SPM, but also … • Matthias Raschendorfer is replacing Federico Grazzini as the WG3a Coordinator • Massimo Milelli is replacing Ulrich Schättler as the WG7 Coordinator • I would like to warmly thank Federico and Uli for their great contributions for the development of COSMO • and wish Matthias and Massimo successful work for COSMO: with the strengthen position of the WG Coordinators your role in the consortium will be significat

  3. PP/PT activities Two important priority projects end with this GM: • PP UTCS which resulted, in between, in introduction of a new transport equation for sub-grid scalar variance for PBL processes parameterization • PP CDC which brought a prototype COSMO model with conservative anelastic EULAG dynamical core • the projects were especially difficult and demanding, as they were charting very much unknown territories • I would like to thank the project leaders and all contributing scientists for their hard and demanding work It concerns also the PT Mire which ends with improvement of Terra for wetlands: thank you!

  4. PP/PT activities The current PP are entering the crucial phase of their development: • PP CORSO enters the final full COSMO year before the start of the Sochi 2014 Olympics • PP KENDA enters the phase of intensive testing and further development of its tools • PP POMPA extends its duration by one year (to 2014) with the aim to prepare fully capable COSMO version for GPU architecture • PP VERSUS2 aims at consolidation of the software to be used operationally by all the members

PP/PT activities There are also new PP starting: • PP CALMO (Calibration of COSMO Model) aimed at preparation of methodology for objective tuning of parameters of the model • PP CELO (COSMO-EULAG Operationalization) aimed at development of operationally capable version of COSMO model employing EULAG dynamical core • if successful, the projects will bring to us useful and powerful tools of practical importance • and, as usal, there will be a lot of activities taking place on the WG levels • good luck in realization of the projects and activities!

  6. COSMO V5_0 • a new unified COSMO V5_0 will be released in near future • it contains many new features required by all COSMO communities and will form a solid base for their further cooperation and for further development of COSMO software • that was possible due to very hard, demanding and dedicated work of the whole group of developers, coordinated by Uli • thank all of you very much, we DO appreciate your work and dedication!

  7. Code management We decided to keep high standards for COSMO code management: • a newly developed technical testing suite is about to be released for common use of all code developers, thank you! • a draft specifications for the NWP test suite are prepared and are under discussions and consideration of the SMC and STC • there are new updates to the „COSMO Standards on the Source Code Management”, clarifying the most important issues

Scientific develolpment We want to keep high scientific standards and promote scientific discussion and cooperation • you are very much encouraged to do it on every level of our activities: from communities and Working Groups to individual scientists • there are examples to follow: International Symposium on Data Assimilation, organized by DWDand sponsored by COSMO April 3-days WG5/VERSUS meeting for review and planning in verification area July 3-days CDC/POMPA meeting for scientific planning in WG2 and WG6 areas in July

Scientific develolpment already planned December workshop in Langen aimed at a knowledge transfer from PP POMPA to a wider group of COSMO and CLM developers • I strongly hope for other such activities in the next year • COSMO would like to encourage especially medium-term visits of COSMO scientists to other COSMO centers to solve scientific issues and to develop scientific expertise of the consortium • also participation in international conferences to show interesting results increasing visibility of COSMO can be supported • there are means, please apply!
