Community Service • 5 Hour Requirement • Prospective e-mail to TA due 9/27 or lose 5 pts • Viewthe criteria for the prospective e-mail on the PAF 101 Website • Final Community Service Form due 11/22, the Friday before Thanksgiving • More information on the PAF 101 Website • Contact the Community Service TA, Madison Oliva
Community Service Criteria Lose up to 35 Points if you do not follow these requirements (Unless enrolled in PST 110): • Complete 5 hours of community service by 11/22 • Sites must be inside of Onondaga County, but must be off-campus. • Sites may NOT be run by a fraternity or sorority. • Sites must have a mission of public service (i.e. nonprofit, governmental agency) • Walks and fundraisers do NOT count as community service, no matter what they are held for. • In certain circumstances, you may be compensated for your service (i.e. Literacy Corps) • Service may NOT be done by working for a politician • Complete the Final Community Service Form that can be found on the PAF 101 website and get it SIGNED BY YOUR CONTACT PERSON • Attach short answer questions to the Service form NOTE: Students do not GAIN 35 points from fulfilling the 5 hour requirement, they can only LOSE points
Volunteer Recruitment • Students with good volunteer opportunities should recruit other PST 101 students • Talk to the Community Service Director, Madison at mpoliva@syr.edu

PST 110: Practicum in Public Policy • 1 credit class meets 5 times throughout the semester – 9/17, 10/8, 10/22, 11/12, 12/3 • 35 hour community service requirement, instead of 5 hour requirement for 101 • Opportunities include: food kitchens, senior citizen homes, working with youth, or create your own • Enroll ASAP- add deadline for this class is 9/16 • Financial & Academic Drop Deadline – 9/16
Wilson Park • Youth Center located behind Brewster-Boland • Programs include Tutoring, Tech Center, Financial Planning and learning about the Environment (or any other program you suggest that is geared toward youth enrichment) • Must contact Michelle Walker to sign up (can’t just go on your own) at mawalker@maxwell.syr.edu
New York Spring Semester Internship • NOW Recruiting for Spring 2020 • MUST have applied for financial aid • MUST have completed PST 101 (and do well (B) or better) • Should be at least a Junior or a Sophomore with Junior Standing • Spend a semester in NYC • Email Michelle at mawalker@maxwell.syr.edufor more information – Deadline to apply 9/27
Late Paper Policy…AGAIN • Module 1 is due at 12:45 on 9/13 • If your Module is late… -Lose 5 points off your module grade if it is handed in by 4:30 on 9/13(Module due date) -Lose 20 points off your Module grade if handed in by the beginning of the next class. • PAPERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BEYOND THE END OF THE NEXT CLASS AFTER MODULE 1 IS DUE -Example; if a module is due Monday and you do not turn it in, you have until Wednesday to turn it in. After that you will receive a 0.
Article Attachment Guidelines • Must be printed directly from webpage • NO LOOSE ARTICLES – must be stapled, taped, or glued to a piece of paper directly after the exercise • Hand write exercise number (and letter, if applicable) on article printout
TPE Topic • Too many underage SU students are drinking alcohol.
TPE Assignment • Write a memo to Robert D. Hradsky, Associate Vice President of the Student Experience and Dean of Students proposing a policy to reduce underage drinking among SU students • Meet in TPE Groups – TPE Assignment #1 MUST be completed by the end of class today
Why is the TPE Reference Page Important? • Last semester, the average grade for the reference page was an F. So watch out for the TPE.
Team Policy Exercise Project Wednesday 9/4: Assignment #1 completed by the end of class. Friday 9/6: Meet in TPE Groups, Write TPE rough draft of Assignment #2 completed by the end of class. Monday 9/9: Meet in TPE Groups, bring Assignment #2 for all group members. 1 typed copy due in Maxwell 102 by 4:00pm! Wednesday 9/11: TPE Debriefing and Slide Competition.
