  4. StrategicTargetedAcademicRemediation Time • STAR Time: Academic enrichment 2 days ALEKS(math) 2 days I READY(reading). Fridays will be silent reading days. Teachers may give students additional support in ELA or Math during this time. • Drinks, recess and phone policies • Help Session: Wednesdays at 8:05. These are specifically for students who need extra help or who have been absent and need to make up work. Attending the morning of a test may not be the most helpful. • Pass AM; Lunch Bunch

Units of Study ELA Fall Semester Reading: Various fiction and non fiction texts Writing: Argumentative/Expository/Narrative Skills: • Citing text • Compare/contrast • Inferencing • Paraphrasing and summarizing; main idea/detail • Point of view/author’s perspective/author’s purpose • Theme, plot, conflict, setting, characterization • Vocabulary in context • Grammar: Direct objects, indirect objects, predicate nouns, predicate adjectives types of pronouns, proper use of subject pronouns, vague and ambiguous pronouns,  reflexive and intensive pronouns, essential and nonessential clauses and phrases(appositives) • Conventions: Semicolons and colons; types of sentences, commas/dashes/parentheses

Units of Study Spring Semester: Reading: Various fiction and non fiction texts; novel study(student choice) Writing: Argumentative/Expository/Narrative Skills: • Citing text • Compare/contrast • Inferencing • Paraphrasing and summarizing; main idea/detail • Point of view/author’s perspective/author’s purpose • Theme, plot, conflict, setting, characterization • Vocabulary in context • Grammar: sentence revision; reflexive and intensive pronouns, dangling and misplaced modifiers • Application of all skills learned throughout the year

Grading & Recovery Policies • Grade weights: 60% - Major Assessments (tests, major projects, major essays) 35% - Minor Assessments (quizzes, minor projects, minor writing assignments) 5% - Homework or minor classwork • Recovery: Only Tests are eligible for recovery. Projects and Essays: are not eligible for recovery Only students who make an 79% or less on the test are eligible for recovery. A student cannot receive higher than an 80% on a recovery test unless he/she is failing the course at the time of recovery. Students failing at the time of the test receive highest grade earned. *Probation: Continuation Criteria for Advanced Classes: Students failing to meet the Continuation Criteria are automatically placed on probation.  Probation may last for as little as one grading period but no more than one school year.   Students are put on probation when their class average falls below an 80%

What can you do to help your child be successful? • Remind your child to check his/her calendar and charge Surface each night. • Track progress and encourage your child to check his/her grades periodically. • Encourage attendance at help sessions, Pass AM, Lunch bunch as needed. • Encourage reading of all types of media. Expose him/her to higher standards of writing as much as possible. • Offering advice and guidance at home on assignments is very helpful. • Encourage your child to email me directly with any questions. This builds our relationship, increases their self-confidence, and improves their ability to advocate for themselves. • Ultimately, self-reliance is our goal! 
