  3. 36 What is this number rounded to the nearest ten?

  4. 36 What you’re really being asked is – is this number closer to 30 or 40? Let’s find out! 30 35 40

  5. 36 36 is closer to 40. Therefore, the number 36 rounded to the nearest ten is 30 35 40

  6. Now you try a few… 1. Round 72 to the nearest ten. 71 72 70 80 Because 72 is closer to 70, 72 rounds to 70. 2. Round 19 to the nearest ten. 12 17 11 13 14 15 16 18 19 10 20 Because 19 is closer to 20, 19 rounds to 20. 3. Round 99 to the nearest ten. 93 98 99 91 94 95 97 92 96 90 100 Because 99 is closer to 100, 99 rounds to 100.

  7. When the numbers get bigger, it gets a little trickier… Round 6 , 7 7 3 to the nearest tens place.

  8. 6 , 7 7 3 Step 1:Find the number in the tens place. Step 2: Underline everything that comesbefore this number also. Step 3: Now we’re looking at the number677!! This number will either stay 677 or round up to the next number, 678. Findthe number after the number in the tens place and circle it.

  9. 6 , 7 7 3 The circled ‘neighbor’ is called the ‘BOSSY NEIGHBOR’ because it tells the underlined number what to do. To figure out if 677 is staying 677 or rounding up to 678, we need to use the bossy neighbor and our rounding hill.

  10. If the BOSSY NEIGHBOR is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 then theunderlined number will If the BOSSY NEIGHBOR is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 then theunderlined number will ROUND UP STAY THE SAME 4 5 6 3 2 7 1 8 0 9

  11. 6 , 7 7 3 3 What is the bossy neighbor here? Now I find the bossy neighbor on the rounding hill! Stays the same! Here is 3!

  12. STAY 677 6 , 7 7 3 3 tells 677 to stay the same! 677 STAYS AND EVERYTHING PAST THE UNDERLINED NUMBER BECOMES A 0! , 6 7 7 0 6,773 ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST TEN IS 6,770.

  13. Let’s see another… ROUND THE FOLLOWING NUMBER TO THE NEAREST THOUSAND. 1 4 , 5 0 7 1. Underline the number in the thousands place. 6. Everything past the underlined number becomes a 0. 4. Find the bossy neighbor on the rounding hill. 5. 14 rounds up to the next number. 2. Underline everything before it also. 3. Circle the bossy neighbor. 15, 0 0 0 5 says ROUND UP!

  14. Let’s see another… ROUND THE FOLLOWING NUMBER TO THE NEAREST HUNDRED. 6 8 1 , 3 0 4 1. Underline the number in the hundreds place. 6. Everything past the underlined number becomes a 0. 4. Find the bossy neighbor on the rounding hill. 5. 6813 STAYS THE SAME. 2. Underline everything before it also. 3. Circle the bossy neighbor. 681,3 0 0 0 says STAY!!

  15. YOU TRY… ROUND THE FOLLOWING NUMBER TO THE NEAREST THOUSAND. 1 2 , 9 2 2 1. Underline the number in the thousands place. 6. Everything past the underlined number becomes a 0. 4. Find the bossy neighbor on the rounding hill. 5. 12 rounds up to the next number - 13. 2. Underline everything before it also. 3. Circle the bossy neighbor. 13, 0 0 0 9 says ROUND UP!!
