Cyprus EURAMET e.V. European Association of National Metrology Institutes bilateral co-operations since ≈ 1900 EUROMET since 1990 EURAMET e.V. since 2007 • Members: • 37 European NMIs • Associates: • > 70 Designated Institutes • holding national standards • JRC (IRMM)
Need for collaboration NMI NMI budgets limited Growing demand for Metrology EURAMET e.V. • New areas of technologye.g. nano‑technology or biotechnology • Areas in which use of metrology is increasingly recognised e.g. chemistry, clinical analysis, food safety, the Grand Challenges,… • Traditional areas of industry- becoming more complex- requiring broader measurement ranges and lower uncertainties
European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research 600 M€, 1/2 from EU, 7 calls EMPIR A185 EMRP A169/185 • Main programme for joint research on metrology • Implemented by EURAMET e. V. • Lifetime: 2014 – 2024 with annual calls between 2014 and 2020 • Different modules, each with a clear focus 400 M€, 1/2 from EU, 5 calls 63 M€, 1/3 from EU, 1 call iMERA-plus 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 | 2016 | 2017 | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 Horizon 2020 FP7
EMRP projects addressing Grand Challenges Healthcare Metrology improves health care e.g. by earlier detection of diseases and patient protection e.g. from radiation, and fosters the competitiveness of related European industries and services. Current EMRP portfolio: 17 health, nine energy and nine environment projects. Final EMRP Call addresses Energy and Environment Metrology for energy supports the successful implementation of smart electrical grids in Europe or improves efficiency in traditional power plants with a considerable impact on reducing energy consumption and reduction of emissions. Energy Metrology for environment provides improved measurements for better understanding of the Earth’s weather and climate. It makes space-based measurements consistent for comparisons with data from other sources. Environment

EURAMET EMPIR ULTRASOUND Laboratory European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research EMPIR European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research • be the main programme for European research on metrology. • be jointly implemented by EURAMET’s member institutions. • be equally financed by EURAMET members and the European Union. • have different modules, each with a clear focus. • have a duration of 10 years with calls launched between 2014 and 2020. • extend the range of activities beyond research by including innovation related, standardisation and capacity building activities. • open up for involvement of excellent research partners.
EURAMET EMPIR ULTRASOUND Laboratory European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research EMPIR Duration: 2014 – 2022 CALLS: 7 50 % EU 50 % NMIs BUDGET: 600 M€
EMPIR Module 1: Science • Is about excellence-driven scientific metrology • Addresses Grand Challenges, i.e. environment, energy, health • Serves high-level interests of EU, WMO, .. • Follows integrated approaches into standardization and for industry uptake • The research agenda builds on roadmaps of EURAMET Technical Committeeshttp://www.euramet.org/index.php?id=roadmaps
EURAMET TG on “Metrology for Environment” • to monitor and report to EURAMET on new perspectives, emerging needs, projects and activities related to metrological traceability, quality assurance, reference methods and calibration procedures for environmental measurements; • to advise EURAMET in cooperating with other RMOs, institutions, organizations, committees, scientific communities, users’ associations and other stakeholders, in order to provide guidance to an appropriate approach to traceability and good practice in metrology for environment; • to consider the most effective means by which TCs involved in climate and environmental activities should cooperate in order to establish a common response to the stated needs of the communities working in environmental science; • to support EURAMET in encouraging NMIs to work with the relevant environmental networks to support a monitoring framework for traceable environmental data over long temporal terms and wide spatial scales based on best practice metrology;
EMPIR Work ProgrammeCall Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) Metrology research underpins the management of natural resources by developing the ability to measure our environment. The projects funded from the 2010 and 2013 EMRP Calls were directed at climate change, air quality, water quality, and radioactive waste.
Call Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) This Call again focuses on metrological research to improve the quality of data to stimulate technological innovation, and to disseminate traceability to, and make traceable measurements in, the field. It also aims to underpin other environmental research initiatives through collaborative metrological research and development
Call Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) This call addresses both local environmental challenges and global metrological challenges for climate monitoring
Call Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) It addresses both local environmental challenges such as those related to: • contamination of water, air and soil • radiation measurement and protection, and acoustic noise • local pollutions and emissions measurements • monitoring of key parameters to detect local climate evolution
Call Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) and global metrological challenges for climate monitoring such as those related to: the essential climate variables of the atmosphere, land and water, including their constituents, contamination, transport and other parameters, and their time evolution and comparability
Call Scope – Metrology for Environment (2016) and: emission control; measurement of gases and particles that have an effect on climate and health validated remote sensing for environmental and climate monitoring. measurements in extreme environments and challenging conditions
EURAMET wishes to put a focus on reliable climate data and especially welcomes proposals enabling the establishment of a long-term European NMI/DI network coordinating the measurement infrastructure in this area and links to a potential global network, in collaboration with user communities.
To enhance the impact of the R&D work, the involvement of the user community such as industry, academia, meteorology and climate research, standardisation and regulatory bodies, as appropriate, is strongly recommended.
