PROOJECT SUMARY • The project has as main objective the formation of a young research team in the field of materials based on aromatic polymers with condensed rings, subscribing to the thematic area S&T priority no. 4 <Nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies>, according to PC7 of EU. • The main idea of the project is the design of polymers with a optimum combination of electronodonor and electronoacceptor aromatic rings in the same repeating unit of the polymer chain, so that an efficient transport of charge carriers will be achieved as to render significant electronic and optoelectronic properties for future use in nanotechnologies • The polymers will be designed as to have satisfactory solubility and processability, thermal, physico-mechanical, optical and electrical properties superior to those of conventional polymers. • Those polymers having an optimum combination of properties and good processability will be selected for testing in electronic devices, such as OLEDs or OFETs • Keywords: polymeric materials dielectric, semiconducting properties nanometric films high performance polymers electronic nanotechnologies
GENERAL OBJECTIVES • The objective of this Research Project is to design new materials for applications in nanotechnologies(Electronics and Optoelectronics) based on polymers that contain in the main chain rigid aromatic segments with condensed rings and flexible segments • The main idea of this project is to find the optimum combination of electronodonor and electronoacceptor units in the same repeating unit of the polymer so that an efficient transport of charge carriers will be achieved as to render significant electronic and optoelectronic properties for future use in electronic and optoelectronic nanotechnologies • Human resource training activities simultaneously addressing the scientific elements of training and specialization of human resources

January - July 2013 • ACHIEVED OBJECTIVES • Evaluation of the thermal stability and crystallinity of the polyamides with naphthylimide units • Preparation of micrometer thick films and coatings on various substrates, having the thickness in the nanometric range, by using polymer solutions in different solvents and their morphological study • Study of the polymer films regarding the adhesion to various substrates, quality and homogeneity, hydrophilic or hydrophobic character of the surface by measuring the contact angle • Evaluation of the electrical properties of poly(amide-naphthylimide)s • Measurement of the electrochemical properties of polymer films and evaluation of HOMO and LUMO energy levels • Study of the photo-optical properties of poly(amide-naphthylimide)sin solution and in solid state (very thin films)

January - July 2013 • ACHIEVED OBJECTIVES • Drawing conclusions on the studies made on poly(amide-naphthylimide)s • Comparative study of the properties of all polymers synthesized during the development of the entire project and of materials made therefrom, and based on this study the selection of the polymers with the best properties • Testing of some of the selected polymers in devices, as organic thin film transistors (OFET's) or liquid crystal alignment cells, and highlighting for others, of the potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices as interlayer dielectrics, flexible and transparent substrates, electron-transporting materials or light-emitting materials • Support and promote the activities and results
