Spices are bought for burial, but the Friday Passover Sabbath has begun.

If that was a Thursday, we can count back to Palm Sunday and place it on the 10th of Nissan. This is important because it would have been on that day that each family would have chosen the Passover lamb in order to keep it for the required three days in their homes.
