  1. Symbolism What do you know about this word? For one minute do a free write on what you know about symbolism (or symbols) and give any examples you can think of.....GO

  2. ·Symbolism allows people to communicate beyond the limits of language.

  3. Symbolism... A thing, person, or place that is presented as a representation of a larger meaning. It stands for something beyond itself.

  4. Authors often use symbolism to communicate a deeper idea than they actually write. Symbolism is an object used by an author to open doors of meaning. They use objects, actions, and characters to give more meaning to the thing itself.

  5. What do these images represent or symbolize?

  6. These symbols are pretty straight forward or "literal". Some symbols are more "abstract" so you have to INFERENCE a bit more to discover the symbolism. What are the abstract concepts or feelings symbolized in the following pictures?

  7. Symbolism in literature is not shared through pictures, rather through images/words that the author uses. As a reader, you must inference to determine the symbols in the story and what the author is trying to tell you.

  8. When looking for symbols in literature, look for people, places, things, or actions that the writer emphasizes or mentions over and over.

  9. Think about whether any repeated symbol might be a clue to identify the theme of the story.

  10. Keep the title in mind as you read.
