Pumpkin Dissections Mooooooohahaha
Pumpkins are from the squash family • They are covered by a hard rind • History • Jack O Lantern Carved from a turnip
Dissection Tools • Scalpel-Very Sharp! Intended to cut flesh. Be very careful • Probe- Straight and Bent. Intended to investigate the interior of organisms • Surgical Scissors- you know what scissors do. • Tweezers- Removal of materials and handling very small objects.
Tips for carving • When making your lid make sure it is notched and wider at the top than the bottom • Do not “rinse” your pumpkin out. This will cause it to mold very quickly. Spraying with a vinegar solution will help stop mold • Lighting a candle in pumpkin will help to dry out the endocarp extending the life of your Jack-o-Lantern • Keep the pumpkin cool. Extended heat will cause the mesocarp to decompose quickly. • If it is too warm keep your Pumpkin in doors or in the refrigerator until Halloween
