Simple Harmonic Motion Experiment

Simple Harmonic Motion Experiment. STARTER. If you double the length of a pendulum, the new period is what factor of the original?. 1.41 2.00 2.41 4.00. T new /T original = √(L new /L original ) = √2 = 1.41 . Part I: Mass – Spring System. A. Assemble this set up.

  1. Simple Harmonic MotionExperiment STARTER If you double the length of a pendulum, the new period is what factor of the original? 1.41 2.00 2.41 4.00 Tnew/Toriginal = √(Lnew/Loriginal) =√2 = 1.41

  2. Part I: Mass – Spring System A. Assemble this set up.

  3. Part I: Mass – Spring System Zero the force sensor when the mass is at rest. C. Displace the mass downwards and release from rest to start the oscillations. Record the motion on the Labquest. Determine the period of the motion from the graph. Record the mass and the period. Repeat for 4 different masses.

  4. Data Table and Graph Table Data table Table for Graphing

  5. Questions and Analysis Plot T2 vs. m Get the slope from the best linear fit. Calculate the spring constant: k = 4p2/slope Spring Color Spring Constant (± 5%) Red 25 N/m Blue 30 N/m Yellow 35 N/m White 40 N/m Green 50 N/m

  6. Part II Starter A mass spring system oscillates with a period T. If the mass is quadrupled, the new period is: 1.41 T 2.00 T 2.41 T 4.00 T Tnew/Toriginal = √(mnew/moriginal) =√4 = 2

  7. Part II: The Pendulum Set up a pendulum with a photogate set to read the period. Start the data collection to read the period. Record the period and the length of the string. Adjust the string to a new length and record the new period and length. D. Repeat for 5 different trials.

  8. Setting Up for Pendulum Timing Hook up the Labquest to the computer and start LoggerPro. 2. Go to Experiment> Set Up Sensors> Show All Interfaces 3. Click on the picture of the Photogate and select “ Pendulum Timing”

  9. Data Table and Graph Table Data table Table for Graphing

  10. Questions and Analysis Plot T2 vs. L Get the slope from the best linear fit. Calculate the acceleration due to gravity: g = 4p2/slope

  11. Report Checklist Starters Data tables Slopes Calculations for k and g. Summary
