USE POWER TOOLS! The Board of Trustees What are we going to do? We are going to build a new recycling shed in a more central place. It will be used for only recycling and be user friendly, bright and appealing to students. How can we make people more aware of the issue? How will we find out how people feel? Our marketing team will survey each class. Syndicate assembly. School assembly. Posters. What will we need to know? Budget approval; skills as above; materials required; time frame; BOT permission.

4. Proposal # 1 The proposal as presented to the Stakeholders by the recycling shed sub-committee of the Enviro- Tech Group :

5. What are we proposing to do? We are proposing to build a recycling shed that has six holes used for recycling. The holes are for glass, plastic, paper, aluminium cans, cardboard and food scraps and its going to have sliding doors. It will have covers. It will be based on a community recycling centre seen in Takapau.

6. Why do we need a new recycling shed? We need a new shed because the one that we have now is too small and has EOTC gear in it. Also it needs to be locked up every time we use it.

7. Where do we propose to build it and why is it the most suitable site? We are proposing to build it in the old hockey bike shed because we already have some of the wood for the site.

8. How much will it cost? We don’t know exactly, but we know how to get at least $300-by having a mufti day and putting the money towards the recycling shed. Also we will be recycling the wood and reuse the bike shed which is already there.

9. Problems! A re-look at the plans for the Arts Suite revealed that the building would, in fact, extend to the area we had selected for the new shed! Back to the drawing board!

10. Proposal # 2 What is it we are proposing to do? We are proposing to build a new recycling shed in part of the Karamu bike shed in the frozen arts week. It will be lockable for security.

11. Why do we need to build a new shed? We need a new shed because our existing shed is too small. It also has to hold the E.O.T.C gear as well. In addition, it’s only suitable for paper.

12. Where do we propose to build it and why is it the most suitable site? We propose to build it in the Karamu bike shed because it has easy access for the truck and students it also reminds people to recycle. (see the H diagram).

13. How will we achieve this? We will achieve it by building it ourselves!

14. When will it happen? Frozen Environmental Arts Week in Term 2 would be a good opportunity!

19. Benefits-Direct A more centralised shed will encourage staff & students to use it more often. No keys are required, so anyone can recycle anytime. We expect a rise in paper recycling & a reduction in the amount of paper put in the skip each week. We hope this will lead to needing the skip emptied less often-a direct saving in money. We also hope to see a reduction in the litter dropped on the Karamu Field because students can put some of their litter in the recycling shed. Food scraps will be added to our compost and feed our organic garden… and then us!

20. BENEFITS - INDIRECT Indirect: We also hope to raise awareness of the need to save the worlds resources. If we can affect the kids’ attitudes, they may influence their families & pass on the message to future generations.

21. Where to from here? Well we have to paint the shed and cut out the holes for the recycling. Its been really cool working on the shed and watching it take shape. I think that children can do anything if we work hard. Mr. Ellis thinks its wonderful that students are getting involved.

23. Injuries! Day 1 : A minor injury Blair scraped his finger. Day 3 : A major accident on the site Mr. Robinson cuts his thumb down to the bone with a saw. He keeps working and is sent to the hospital the next morning. Day 4 : It is more serious than first thought he has cut a tendon. He has to have his tendon stitched under local anesthetic. If he hits it he will lose his finger, but he comes back on day 5to help anyway.

25. CONSERVING RESOURCES…& THE BUDGET!!! • Due to some fairly astute bargaining by Cameron, Te Awaiti and Karl at the Building Recyclers and by reusing timber from the hockey field bike shed, the project has come in well under the budget of $500 set by Mr. Ellis. The only new materials were the hinges and padlocks. Even the paint will be left-overs from other projects. It is truly a recycled recycling shed!!
