  1. Do NOW What do you think the single most important thing the government provides is? Why? • Example: Security, Education, Welfare, Healthcare etc. • Take out vocab charts • Prepare for quiz

  2. Agenda • Do NOW • Exit ticket review • Vocab Quiz • Quiz grading • Vocab charts • Social Values Notes • Social Values Reading • Social Values Discussion • Exit Ticket

  3. Objective and Standard • I will analyze real life examples of tradeoffs between social values, scoring a 2.7 or higher on an exit ticket. 12.1.1 Analyze the influence of Ancient and leading European political thinkers such as John Locke, Montesquieu, Machiavelli, and William Blackstone on the development of American government

  4. Exemplar exit ticket-Briana Hernandez • The State of Nature is when there is no sort of government. If we lived in a state of nature, then there would be no laws, police, hospitals, or schools, and many would have full liberty. The people within the state of nature would most likely do whatever they want with no one to stop them. In my opinion, people would not live in a stable environment, especially today. Many would rely on themselves and no one else in order to survive in the state of nature. With government, you are able to get security, yet you must give up some of your own freedom. Many will be safe, protected and have help from others.

  9. What is Government? Government is an organizational unit that has authority over society through laws. The White House in Washington DC, USA

  10. Why Do Governments Exist? Governments exist to preserve order in society, allowing people to live together. What would happen on this busy road if there were NO rules about how to drive?

  11. Social Values: Background • People and societies hold certain values – ideas that they think are important to live by • Sometimes these values compete against one another • Liberty • Security • Equity • Efficiency

  12. Social Values: Definitions • Liberty: Freedom to do what you choose without punishment • Security: safety from harm, usually physical harm • Equity: Equality and fairness • Efficiency: making the most out of the resources you have Which is MOST important to you?

  13. Tradeoffs • A tradeoff is an exchange that occurs as a compromise

  14. Capitalism vs. Socialism • Capitalism is an economic system in which individuals and businesses are encouraged to pursue self-interest. Individuals and businesses can reap the benefits of their labor with minimal government interference • Socialism is an economic system in which the government redistributes wealth equally amongst its citizens. The government also owns private property such as land, factories, businesses etc.

  15. Equity vs. Efficiency in Grades Capitalism The grade you earn is the one you keep Logic: People will work hardest for themselves Socialism Grades are distributed equally according to the class average Logic: People will work hard for themselves, but also the group as well

  17. PCoD context • USA Patriot Act (known as Patriot Act)-signed by George Bush Jr. on Oct. 26,2011 as a response to 9/11. • Acronym- Uniting (and) Strengthening America (by) Providing Appropriate Tools Required (to) Intercept (and) Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 • Authorized more government power in ensuring domestic security • wiretaps, internet surveillance • Less discretion needed by border patrol, customs, and immigration officials

  19. Security/Liberty & Equity/Efficiency • Complete the readings silently and independently. • If you have a question, come to the back of the class for help. • When you are done with the questions, begin working on the exit ticket • I will give you thirty minutes to work on this before we discuss • After the discussion, you will have time to complete the reading and exit ticket • Read and highlight carefully since I will allow you to use the reading and questions for the exit ticket

  20. Around the world • Around the classroom we have four posters • Liberty • Security • Equity • Efficiency • Each poster is separated into two columns: Successes and failures • Moving around the classroom, you will compile a list of the ways that the American government successfully and unsuccessfully protects these values

  21. Clash in Values (2 paragraphs) Mild Option • Citing evidence from the readings, discuss which value you support more in the debate over security vs. liberty in the Patriot Act. • Citing evidence from the readings, discuss which value you support more in the debate over equity vs. efficiency in school funding. Spicy Option Explain how this quote reflects the battle between equity and efficiency: "The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill
