Before we get started… • What are some things you appreciate about the changes from the past to the present? A mother has a toddler who loves to run around. Who Is This? • He was born to a teenage mother. At the age of 5 his mother was imprisoned for armed robbery. He went to live with an aunt and uncle who were very religious. When his mother had served her sentence, she reclaimed him. At age 13 he committed his first armed robbery and was sent to a juvenile detention center for boys. He spent the rest of his teenage years in a variety of juvenile detention centers.
1. Charles Manson • an American criminal who led what became known as the Manson Family, a quasi-commune that arose in California in the late 1960s He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit the Tate/LaBianca murders, carried out by members of the group at his instruction. He was convicted of the murders through the joint-responsibility rule, which makes each member of a conspiracy guilty of crimes his fellow conspirators commit in furtherance of the conspiracy's object.

Who Is This? • He is the youngest of seven children. In high school he was known as a hard-working student who rarely got into trouble.
2. Scott Petersen was convicted of the murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn child in Modesto, California. Peterson's case dominated the American media for many months.

Who Is This? • She is the daughter of a teenage mother. She lived with her grandmother for the first few years of her life. When she was six, she went to live with her mother. At age nine, male relatives and a family friend began sexually abusing her. The abuse lasted for four years. She tried to run away but was caught and sent to a juvenile detention center. The center was full, so she was out on her own at age 14.
3. Oprah Winfrey Oprah Winfrey rose from poverty and a troubled youth to become the most powerful and influential woman in television and, according to Forbes Magazine, the world's most highly paid entertainer

Who Is This? • He is one of thirteen children. He never knew his father, and his mother was addicted to drugs most of his childhood. He attended 11 different schools in nine years. He was forcibly removed from his mother’s care by the department of human services. He lived with foster families and with friends. In high school he became homeless.
4. Michael Oher His life through his first year of college is one of the subjects of Michael Lewis's 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game and the subject of the 2009 film The Blind Side.

Who Is This? • She began acting at age three and charmed Americans with her appearance in commercials and movies. As a teenager, she developed an eating disorder and began experimenting with drugs and alcohol. She has been in and out of jail and treatment facilities for repeated drug and alcohol charges.
5. Lindsay Lohan Lohan, who was released on Tuesday after just 23 days of a court-ordered 90-day rehabilitation program, has also got back behind the wheel, after the suspension of her driving license for a 2007 drunk driving and cocaine possession charge. (August 26, 2010)

Who Is This? • He is the son of Jamaican immigrants and grew up in the Bronx. He graduated from high school but admits that he did not have a great deal of ambition regarding his future.
6. Colin Powell Colin Powell became the first African-American Secretary of State in U.S. history when he took office in 2001. Powell was a career soldier who fought in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Who Is This? • Her childhood was marked by a father who would disappear for days at a time on drinking and gambling binges. She recalls her mother loading her and her siblings into the family car to go look for her dad. She also remembers an angry mob at her front door in the middle of the night after her father lost all the family’s belongings in a poker game.
7. Robin McGraw • Robin McGraw, wife of best-selling author and television talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw, has made "family first" her mission. Married for 33 years to Dr. Phil, whom she fondly refers to as "Phillip," Robin has made her marriage and raising their two sons Jay, 30, and Jordan, 23, her priority in life.
