  1. The Effects of the Green Revolution By: Matt Sarfan Dave Maser Ben Trainer

  2. Almost certainly, however, the first essential component of social justice is adequate food for all mankind. -Dr. Norman Borlaug

  3. What Is The Green Revolution? • Dr. Norman Borlaug • High yielding varieties of grains • More irrigation • Modernization of management techniques • Hybridizing seeds and distribution. • Synthetic fertilizers • Pesticides

  4. Dr. Norman Borlaug. Father of the Green Revolution

  5. Dr. Norman Borlaug • Cresco, Iowa March 25 1914 • Bachelor of science degree • Masters and Doctorate in plant pathology. • Microbiologist

  6. High Yielding Variety of Grains • Basic Problems • Excess fertilizer (eutrophication) • Creates nonpoint pollution • Economic problems • Land degradation • Soil nutrient depletion • Monocultures • Food chain problems • Risky due to pathogens • Increased Pesticides • Ruins all other biodiversity • Creates strong home for pests

  7. More Irrigation • New crops need more water • Water table has gone down • Could cause arguments over lower water amounts

  8. Hybridizing Seeds • Loss of old seeds and genes. • Unintended side effects • Can be dangerous for human consumption • “Various feeding studies in animals have resulted in potentially pre-cancerous cell growth, damaged immune systems, smaller brains, livers, and testicles, partial atrophy or increased density of the liver, odd shaped cell nuclei and other unexplained anomalies, false pregnancies and higher death rates.” • Forces farmers to buy more

  9. Synthetic Fertilizers • Too much nitrogen in synthetic fertilizers gives too much nitrogen. • Ruins nitrogen: carbon balance • Causes plant to take up more water • More expensive for farmers • Lower pest resistance

  10. Pesticides • Harmful to humans and animals • Growth issues to fetuses • Hurts brain cells • Parkinson’s disease • Pesticide resistant pests developed • Runoff
