Chapter 2 Theme 3. Developing the New World. People saw the treasures coming out of the New land. Did not want Spain to gain power. They were building a large army. So others (England wanted to start their own. They wanted the mid Atlantic to be far from the Spanish Florida.

Developing the New World • People saw the treasures coming out of the New land. • Did not want Spain to gain power. They were building a large army. • So others (England wanted to start their own. • They wanted the mid Atlantic to be far from the Spanish Florida.
England was being over run by population. Wanted to develop colonies to provide more room and jobs. • When the English came they settled and names it Virginia (because the Queen never married she was known as the Virgin Queen) • Met with the Algonquian Indians. • Friendly exchange, began a trade system. • Became Allies
They reported back to England that it was safe, and they sent military men and others over to start a colony. • (To capture Spanish ships) • Two Indians went back to England to learn the culture
When a new group came out the settlers had problems, lost all their food, the Natives helped them. • Most of the people were military not farmers. • Winter came they were not prepared. • Depended on the Natives still.
Natives angry by Spring • English accused them of stealing, with harsh punishments, burning village and crops. • Indians cut off the Europeans • Europeans began to fight, killing the Indians by creating a fake meeting • The colony was lost.
Third Try • Brought a group of families. • Spring of 1587 110 colonist left England • Build houses, plant crops. • Natives were more hostile
A small crew returned to England for supplies for a few months, but they were at war with Spain. • Nobody wanted to give food back to the small colony. Took three years to return • When returned the colony was gone, nobody knew what happened to them. • Nobody settled in NC for decades.
1607 English returned to the colonies and created first permanent one, Jamestown, Virginia. • 1620 Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts, on the Mayflower. Called the settlement New England.
