Materials for Craft • Brown paper lunch bag • Newspaper • Yellow, brown, orange, black, blue, and red construction paper • 2 googly eyes • Glue • Scissors • Tape • Template (Provided Online)
Purpose • Children are surrounded by nature and see the various aspects of fall. • It is important for them to understand what the purpose a scarecrow has and why. • It teaches about science and nature.

What Are Scarecrows? • Human like figures • Designed to scare birds away from farmers crops • Crows in particular
Why Are Scarecrows Important? • Help farmers from loosing their crops • Allow farmers to run a successful business • Make farmers life easier
Where Do You See Scarecrows? • On farms around Halloween • Prime time is fall • Possible to be seen in summer fields
What Materials Do You Need to Make a Scarecrow? • Overalls • Plaid Shirt • Straw Hat • Hay (for decorating and stuffing) • Boards and sticks for support • Bag or Pillow case for the head • Bandana • Shoes • Hay for stuff • Rope and String • Colored leaves

Craft Time! Preparing the Scarecrow Face! 1.) Take Paper Bag 2.) Stuff with newspaper 3.) Tape bag closed 4.) Trace 8 pieces on construction paper 5.) Cut out all 8 pieces 6.) Cut out 1 inch thick strips for hair in various lengths
Craft Time Continued! Time to Assemble and GLUE! • Glue bow toward bottom middle of the bag • Glue tiny square inside the bow • Glue smiley face above the bow • Glue googly eyes at same height as the smile top • Glue nose in the middle • Glue hair strips to top of bag • Glue hat pieces together • Glue hat strip on and leaf • Glue hat on scarecrow
Tell About Your Scarecrow! • Name your scarecrow • Make up a story about your Scarecrow Friend and write! • Example • Where? What? Adventures?
Lesson Modifications • Special Needs Students: • Assist with craft • Help the student choose a name and favorite activity • Gifted Students: • Have a detailed story written about their Scarecrow • Also a poem or other writing
