Field Experiences • 30 hours in a science or math classroom (SBAC school or PK Yonge) • Placements extend over 10 weeks (beginning week of Jan 28)
What will you be doing? • Negotiation with the cooperating teacher • Some possible activities • Observing • Grading student work • Helping small groups • Setting up labs/activities • Tutoring students who are struggling • Providing enrichment activities
A few suggestions • If you want to try something out, ask the cooperating teacher • Be proactive—suggest ways that you would like to participate in the classroom • Observing classes is great, but it should not be the only thing you do
Field Reflections • Due Feb 12, Mar 18, Apr 8 • 2-3 pages (double spaced, 12pt font, Times New Roman font or equivalent) • Each reflection should have a theme. Pick one of the following themes: Nature of science, science pedagogies (teaching strategies), classroom issues & contexts, student learning. • If you think another theme would better fit your situation, run it by the instructor.
HWQ1 • Describe a notable science learning experience in your own life. What did you learn? Why was this experience powerful enough for you to remember? What factors contributed to your learning? Describe the setting in which this learning took place. Did a teacher or mentor influence this experience? If so, how did that individual facilitate the experience?
Small Group Discussion • Share your notable learning experiences. • Across the group, what are the commonalities among these experiences? • What should the aims of science/math education be?
Reflecting on Teaching & Learning • What is reflection? • Thoughtful consideration of events, practices, and experiences with an eye toward positive changes. • What is reflection NOT? • Simple recounting of events. • Uncritical acceptance of anything that happens. • Concentrated search for problems.
